Can anybody tell me if there is any listing or register of chassis numbers against engine number and gearbox number (if the gearboxes do have a number? can somebody at least confirn whether they do - and if so where to look for it?), as I'm trying to check if a car I'm looking out is original - or made up of parts from various dubious sources

Yes, all three have VIN numbers. In addition, all of the body panels and anything major of the vehicle will have the VIN stamped or stickered on it.
