Need some tips/help on welding plates to sheet metal or floor board
I just purchased a 140 hobart handler mig welder. I have some plates i need to weld onto my chassis for my cage. Practiced on my wrecked car on the floorboard and i cant seem to get a good seam without burning thru the sheetmetal. Im using .023 non-flux solid wire with gas, setting is on 1 and feed is around 30-25.
How are u guys doing this without burning thru?? I went to home depot and bought some .030 wire and sheet metal to practice on, maybe a thicker wire might help?...any tips would be great!
Thanks!

Clean Both the top and the underside of were your gonna weld them. This will help alot, when you weld them just keep the puddle on the thicker metal (the plate). If you just started welding though, I wouldnt recommend jumping right into welding cages.
Will try that, actually probably gonna have my bro weld in the plates for me when he gets time, he already tigged the chromoly tubes up....
Im trying to learn though..ha
So places where i cant clean the underside, how do i go about that? Like in the trunk i cant get to the underside...theres another peice of sheet metal wrapped around that underneath

Just clean them areas the best you can, Welding the plates to the floor is probably the worst part of welding a cage in. Make sure you keep a bucket of water around to, the undercoating likes to catch fire.
