Stater Issue - help me before my fiance kills me!
Ok, so I bought back my old '94 GS-R for the fiance to use as a daily driver since we sold her BMW. When I bought it back my buddy, who owned it, said the starter had been giving him some trouble. He stated the original kept clicking to where you would hear the starter gear hit the flywheel but it wouldn't actually crank. He pulled that starter and put another on in which is where I come in. I got the car and, like I said he was having some issues with it, the starter got worse and more annoying. So, I went out and bought another, threw it in about 4 months ago and now this one is doing it...BADLY. I tried for about 30 min this morning to start it and all I got was TINK TINK TINK....nothing. Ended up pop starting it.
What could be the issue? 3 starters in under 1yr?!?!?!?
Please help.....the fiance is about to strangle me....lol

maybe the flywheel is messed up and causing it not to engage. like maybe the old starter grinded some of the teeth off of the flywheel.
No the flywheel is good still because you hear it "Tink" but no crank. I got the car to work, turned it off, and it started right away agin....
....i dont get it.

hey man, I'm having the same problem with my 94 teg, is it worse on cold days? I'm no mechanic, but i was trying to start in one day in a grocery store parking lot, some guy came up to me and asked me to pop my hood, he said it sounded like my coil? And pointed to my distributor cap, i'm still trying to find out on the forum what it is, but i thought it was my starter at first too, but this guy said no it was my coil....
Not to bash this guy since I dont know him but he is wrong. It is the starter. Once I got the new one the car started great for a while and now it is back to ****. He probably thought it was the distributor b/c the starter is right below it and I can see how he might have thought the sound was coming from there but I literally put my hand on the starter today and the finace turned the key and you can feel it "tink"
yah im no mechanic so i wasn't sure, either. Thats why im on here for help, but im getting the same problem, I hear a relay or somthing clicking but its not even trying to turn over, but if i keep messing with it, it eventually turns over.

If the solenoid is clicking, the starter motor should be getting power. If it is not turning, it either has low voltage or a bad cable from the battery or ground (engine ground). A bad cable or ground can cause a low voltage situation due to resistance and harm the starter.

Yep. From what your saying it could be a bad cable. Then again it could be alot of things. Troubleshoot, and you will be able to figure it out.

Try one of these when the car won't start
1) Turn the motor by hand (crank pulley) when it won't start, then try to start it again...any luck?
or...
2) Put the car in gear and rock it back and forth a few times and then try to start it again...any luck?
If it starts after one of the two methods above, then it could very well be a broken tooth on the flywheel...
That *TINK* could in fact be a broken flywheel tooth/teeth...if one of the tooths is half-way broken, then it will cause the tooth on the starter to hit the tip of the broken tooth on the flywheel making it nearly impossible to start...
Another way to check for broken teeth on the flywheel is to jack up the car and remove the flywheel inspection plate so you can see the flywheel (it's the little thing metal plate just next to the thin tip of the oil pan). Have some turn the motor by hand using the crank bolt and you check for broken teeth. To make it easier, get a paint pen or a bright marker and mark the tooth you start at that way you know when the motor has made a full turn. Good luck!
