I put this in the suspension section, but I figured I should put it here too.....

Ok, so over the weekend I installed my new Tein Basics and everything went smoothly. I take my car in (EJ8) the next morning to get the alignment and my alignment guy says that my caster is off +.5 degrees on the driver side front. Im like WTF? Im stumped because the car was just in there 3 weeks prior getting an alignment cause I had just installed my Wicked Tuning camber kit and everything was put right into spec with that alignment. I havent hit any pot holes, wrecked anything, etc. during that time, so I don't see why anything could be bent. Is +.5 degrees anything to be worried about? I dont have the slightest idea of where to look! I know that I need some new tires soon, but I have some vibration in the steering at about 70mph on the freeway. It wasnt there before the new install. Could bad caster cause vibration in the steering? Can someone please chime in and tell me where I need to start looking? Thanks....

a variation of .5 in caster really isnt a big deal, especially on a fwd. You typically want +.5 higher on the passenger side to compensate for road crown so the car will drive dead straight down the road(with camber,toe set).

You arent going to notice any problems with your settings how they are.

 

So here are my settings....

LEFT FRONT
Camber: -0.8
Caster: 0.5
Toe: .05

RIGHT FRONT
Camber: -0.1
Caster: 1.6
Toe: .04

Would you consider this to be within spec??? BTW the caster on the alignment before on the left front was 1.0

that shows a full degree of difference between left and right in the caster, that may be noticeable but i would guess that it is barely there. You may get a slow left drift over a long flat stretch of road.

 

It doesn't pull any direction on the freeway.... straight as an arrow. My concern is the vibration at freeway speeds. Would it cause this? Or do I need to blame the tires?

 

it doesnt pull because caster pulls to the side with the least caster and camber pulls to the side with the most camber so they are each pulling agaist each other which makes it go straight

 

Forgive my suspension noobieness but is that what it is meant to do?

no each side should have the same specs. im guessing that you have a caster problem (that was making it pull to one side) and the alignment guy adjusted the camber to make it pull the other way which would cancel out which way ity pulled.

 

So I guess the question still remains. What is causing the bad caster?????

 

Bump.... could it just be that the new suspension hasnt settled in?????

 

for the vibration get ur wheel re balanced and make sure u tighten the lug nut in the + pattern top, bottom then left to right, if that dont make it better check out the tires
