Smog Q's
Ok guys im a noob at smog **** so please help me out here.On a side not I juswt bought this car also and even though I did pass smog a barely did.So I want to know how to trouble shoot it so next time I need to do it I can also pass. Some of these numbers barely passed so here it goes:
At 15mph I read.
HC 66 Max is 66
CO .19 max is .57 so im ok.
NO 385 max is 487.So-so.
Co2 15.1
O2 0.0
At 25mph I read.
HC 48 max 49
CO .26 max .55
NO 136 max 774
Co2 15.0
O2 0.0
Major concern is HC.Please help this noob out.Point me in the right direction.

OK that helped a little. What can I do to fix this high HC.How in the hell would I kow if im running rich or lean? The paper states my timing was at 12*btdc.So im confused on what the hell is wrong.Maybe that's why im only getting about 25-28 miles per gallon?
HC = unburnt gas
Things that could raise HC are...
Tune-up Cap, rotor, sparkplugs If old or out of spec.
Timing.. you are at 12btdc if that is your spec then you are good.
Fuel pressure too high. Regulator bad.
Stuck/plugged injectors Poor flow.
Vacuum leak
Coolant temp sensor
Air temp sensor
O2 sensor
So it would be hard to tell you what you need to check without seeing the car.

Well so far tune up was done by dealer no more than a month ago even oil.So I have all brand new oem parts from the dealer.Wires, plugs, rotor, cap etc.How can one test the fuel regulator?Vacuum lines seem ok.Injectors well who knows? One thing I notice is that when I run my car hard it smells like freaken rotten eggs.LoL.I don't know why that would be.
To check fuel pressure you need a guage that screws into the bolt on top of the fuel filter.
If you don't, run some injector cleaner in the gas tank. Might help. You can get an injector cleaning service at the dealer.
As for the rotton egg smell try some different flavors of gas. Switch to 76 or to chevron.

Well I use Chevron.I always put 89 in it.Would that cause high HC?I mean I don't think the octane has anything to do with it.Maybe its not eggs maybe its gas I don't know how to explain it.Someone here once told me that I can also disconnect the vacuum line on top of the FPR and if the rpm's don't go up then its bad.Is this true?Sorry for all the questions but your very helpful. And also Thanx for all the help so far
Oh yeah,all this on a EJ8

Octane....NO it won't raise HC much a few PPM's And the car will adjust for it.
FPR and vacuum line, Hmmm. might raise the idle a bit might lower it a bit. Check the vacuum line also for gas in it when you pull it off.
The way the FPR works is it lowers the pressure at idle because of high vacuum in the IM. Then off idle it raises the fuel pressure because of the absense of vacuum in the IM.
If you haven't swap out the O2 sensor I would suggest that as they usually go out around 100-120K miles. Yes some do last more than that.
