Default How much power is needed for things like this?

I had to haul around 300lbs of books in the trunk of my 1991 Accord EX on February 22 for work, yet the car didn't struggle to carry the weight, and it didn't show any noticeable drop in performance except on hills. I am wondering if the engine's rated power (130hp, 142lb/ft torque) would be enough to accomplish that, or if the car has more power due to a combination of the K&N air filter, 5W30 synthetic-blend oil, and 10% ethanol-blended gas...

you are asking if a car in stock trim has the power/ability to lug around an extra 300lbs in weight?

yes...

your added K&N, oil and gas really didn't do much of anything to help it achieve this as it can do it already.

What I am asking is if a 1991 Accord in stock trim can haul 300lbs and not even know it. There was no noticeable drop in performance while hauling 300lbs. That's why I'm curious as to if the car in stock trim can really do that.

300lbs isn't much. Think about how much weight is in the car when you drive around with a couple passengers, same thing.

Ethanol is less efficient than gasoline and is more than likely robbing you of power rather than giving you any (although at 10% it can't hurt too bad). Ethanol is one of the worst ideas our gov't has had in quite some time

There will be some loss but I have a feeling you're not going to notice it much.

Muffinman, the thing is, I didn't notice ANY loss at all except when going uphill. As I said in my last post, my car DID NOT struggle to carry 300lbs of books. Keep in mind, I weigh 180lbs, so altogether, that's almost 500lbs of weight in the car, yet the car did not even know it was hauling the extra 300lbs of dead weight.

TouringAccord, I know most cars can haul as much as 500lbs bone stock, but most 4-cylinder cars struggle when they have to haul that much. My question here is how my 4-cylinder Accord is able to haul 500lbs without struggling, and how much horsepower is needed to haul 500lbs without struggling.

What do you want to hear?? people have answered the question. The car is made to seat 5 people, so whats 300 pounds. And how did you know the car does not know the difference, did you ask it? Obviously the more weight you put in the car the more it will struggle uphill, but 300 pounds is not that much weight when you think about it. I've had over 600 pounds of weights in mine, and other people on here tow with theirs, the car is more capable than you are giving it credit for.

Your car is invincible then, no other explanation.

steer, why do I have to keep sounding like a broken record all the time? I am saying my car did not struggle to haul 300lbs of books in the trunk...Add to that my 180lb body weight, and that amounts to almost 500lbs total weight. That's equivilant to me and an adult woman plus two kids, yet the car did not struggle at all on a straight and level road. NO NOTICEABLE DROP IN PERFORMANCE OR BRAKING POWER when hauling that much weight down a straight and level road. Most 4-cylinder cars struggle when they have to haul a full load like that, but mine never struggled at all except on hills.

My question is, how much horsepower and torque is needed to haul that much weight without struggling?

Exactly, no "noticeable" amount EXCEPT on hills.

Once you're moving you're moving.

Your braking distance was lengthened, your 0-60 was longer, etc.

But you are not a computer to notice the actual difference.

Accords have a good amount of torque on them.

You're arguing over nothing.

Your 'butt dyno' needs recalibrating.

I have a 91 Accord with a more or less stock engine (f22A9, rated 148bhp from factory), and it definitley has less performance with a load on. I can feel the difference with one heavy passenger. The engine is in fine form / tune and performs well, so it's not due to lack of power.

There is a big difference between a noticeable drop in performance and "struggling". My car doesn't 'struggle' with five people on board and a full boot (trunk), but it certainly performs less well. There is no way that adding 300lbs won't noticably affect performance unless you particularly insensitive to it.

Seriously guys? If you want to know what the HP of your car is right now then get in on a dyno.
