Default Critique my welds, MIG.

If anything looks wrong please tell me where I screwed up. Im not sure how much you can judge on flat welds, but any advise is better than none. This is my first time using my new mig (Lincoln 180).

Shaded region was not me.

looks pretty good. welding joints will show how your doing a little better. clean up the material a little better too.

Yeah I figured that was one of the problems. (the scrap had some heavy duty coating on it)

Are the marks throughout most of the welds contamination?

chances are you will need to go a little straighter but overall it looks fine for just making little worms or whatever those are. The coating it called mill scale. It's going to be on any hot rolled stock you get.

yeah. mig has little more slop then tig all the time though. if you take off that coating it will weld super nice.

This was scrap from a shed, it had some sort of heavy paint on it. Ill try going straighter, I was more focused on a consistent puddle.

doesnt look too bad for your first time welding though mill scale. The scale wont let the puddle spread out like it will on clean steel so I usually end up whipping the gun a bit in a forward/backward motion with a setup a tiny bit heavy on the volts. You dont have to have a really pronounced whip either. Something like 1-2 wire widths long at most. Try scribing some cheat lines so you have something to follow while you are learning to make imaginary straight lines.

It becomes a totally different ball game once you start welding pipes together.... thinner material makes it more challenging.....

I have some aluminized steel (tubing) I can mess with, but isnt the aluminum coating not good for you?

it's galvanized that's REALLY bad for you not aluminized..although I can't imagine it's that great for you lungs.

Learn to weld flat first and work you way down to thinner flat stock. Once you can do that properly then work with some tubing.

You have a metal scrap yard near you? They charge by the lb no matter what configuration the scrap is in. It's a fantastic way to get a variety of thicknesses and shapes to practice on.

Sure it wasn't. First picture looks like some undercut and porosity. Second one looks better but like everyone else said you won't really know till you weld some joints together.

short arc or fluxcore???? DO you mean short circuit transfer? Also he says it's mig right in the title not fluxcore. He isn't weaving either, he is just doing straight beads. When doing beads on flat piece they always look a little built up and lumpy.

Is that fluxcore?

If so get some regular with gas and clean metal, it will look much nicer.

I also have the 180.

It is not flux, it is normal wire and have the tank set to 15cfh. Iv used flux in the past and it had so much more spatter. With this I *think* I have the gas settings right because of the miniscule spatter?
