yeah doors will fit. differences that i can think of:
--b-pillars are different sizes, but its attached to door=no biggie
--you're going from door mounted seatbelts (90-91) to not (88-89), so you gotta find a new mounting point for the seatbelts in the inside pillar
--and i think the moldings are differents sizes? but not 100% sure on this one.

probably forgot something

The answer is yes and no. They bolt up the same and will latch right, fit perfectly cosmetically from the outside and work, but will leak air and water because the 88 door seal takes a different path and the door jamb on the 90 is shaped different too.

I'm currently in the middle of the same mod, looks like its going to involve nothing short of me cutting up a donor 88 and tack welding a small area of its door jamb to my 90 so the seal works right.

So many fuggers here on honda-tech will tell you it is plug and play but it certainly is not.

Other cosmetic stuff you need to consider the door impact exterior strips are different, the inner door cards are way different, so just get jdm ones or 88's.

FAQ FAQ FAQ!! ADD TO FAQ!! I'd be miffed if I tried this (though I know the trim is fatter and does not protrude as far on early Gen2) and had the windage problem!

BTW if it helps for the FAQ I'll post up some pics of jamb differences and my door jamb modificiation.

This really needs to be documented. Search this subject, you'll see countless posts about swapping doors which are wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These people should be forced to drive yugos!!!

hmm...this is interesting...

I'm doing this mod while I rebuild my car. I actually have the 88 doors on the car for the moment. I hadn't noticed what you mentioned about the door shapes and seal. I'll have to take the 90 and 88 doors and sit them side by side.

How bad is the leak? Is it tolerable, or will water pour into the car?

I doesn't leak alot of water, it runs down the jamb as opposed to dumping into the interior floor and carpet. I will hold water behind the lower door seal if parked nose downhill. I would absolutely avoid high pressure car wash places, and be real careful when you wash it yourself.

The windage is pretty bad, I've been avoiding turnpike trips because of it, and my tolerance is pretty high as I used to have a jeep softtop....

For me the leak is that bad if I can't get it right, I'm not going to get the car painted, its not worth the money making it look perfect if it doesn't function perfect.

If the car was a beater, race or a drag car only I wouldn't bother, but I plan on using this thing daily as I have been.

Not what I wanted to hear...

I got the 88 doors so I could run the bronze windows. This is going to throw a wrench into my plans for sure.

I have an 88 CRX si and just bought EF8 doors with power windows, and mirrors.

My question is will it bolt up and not leak?

Whoa Whoa Whoa.
I got 88's on my 91 and everything bolts up and works good but I have not "tested" anything as the car is 2 feet in the air and a bare shell.
I want some more info from others who have done this swap as this is the first I have heard of excessive wind noise? I will pull out my 91's and put them next to the 88's this weekend and inspect this.

88 crx doors do not fit 89-91 crx's maily because of the seatbelts. having the seatbelts on the door (89-91) make the door longer and having the seatbelts on the chasis (88) are shorter.

WRONG I have them ON MY CAR LINED UP PERFECT. only question is cause the jamb is shaped different so is a wind noise casused and my car is not drivable at the moment so I can not confirm and that is the answer we are looking for.
There are plenty of pics on honda tech of the doors swaped, so you guys who think the doors are longer, do you think honda made the crx longer in 89-91

I will take pictures of the 2 door side by side this weekend. You will see the difference. It's actually more than I expected. Outside it fits perfect...but the seal doesn't line up about where the window begins. The gap was close to 3/4"...so I could see there being a noise issue.

Yea I seen the difference, I also got both sets of doors but I think a univeral seal and some double sided tape could be an answer but I am curious about people who have driven with this swap.

I am driving my 90 crx daily with 88 doors, as I have been for the last few months. The wind noise is just enough to bother you. Its not just my being ****, if someone new gets in the car, the first thing they do is try to roll up the window thinking its not up the whole way. It is annoying. (If you're running an apex n1 with a fully stripped interior, you probably won't notice it, but then you have a entirely different problem)

Like I said above when I started this thread, if you compare the 2 versions of the doors and jambs, they are VERY much different. The seal will eventually tear where it touches and then doesn't.

We are talking about a serious void where the seal doesn't touch at all.

I currently have a fellow honda-techer that cut the jambs off an 88 he is selling to me. My plan is as of the moment is to sister weld the jamb over top of my 90 where it matches up and weld/blend/fill it in before paint this summer.

I'll be fully documenting it here on this post or the EF forum as a new thread. I hope to have the panels soon, so keep checking back.

I can't believe nobody has figured this out sooner, door swapping is such an old subject, I just can't believe so many say its plug and play but it certainly IS NOT!

After figuring this out, I might try to reproduce the panels somehow for others, but either way to do it right will probably require welding of some sort.

BTW don't get mad at me for pointing this problem out, get mad at all the [freak]ers here on honda-tech that say its plug and play!

I really want my car on the road by summer, so I think I've resolved to hold off on this project maybe indefinitely...

I just weighed the pro's and con's...and I'd have to deal with the jamb issue, and finding parts for the 89 doors to complete the swap. I already have complete doors that came with the car, in the correct color.

The only downside is that I won't be able to use the bronze window glass. I guess I can get a tint shop to match some tint to the other bronze pieces...

Who knows, maybe I'll attempt it again in the future...
