I tried to find another thread to bump or to look off of. No luck.
Here is what happened...
After work today I was driving home, and I heard a winding noise coming from about the middle of my engine bay. When I speed up it gets louder. When I slow down it gets softer. I push the clutch in, but it doesn't effect the noise. I pulled over to check it out, but didn't hear anything. There was a little bit of the CV axle fluid on the middle of the firewall -- driver side. I checked the boot and it's not torn, so there probably is a leak somewhere.
I started to drive some more. The noise sounded really bad with the acceleration, so I pulled over and shut the car off and looked in the engine bay. I noticed some snow on the passenger lower arm in the bay. I brushed it off and made sure my axles were fine. Then I started driving once more.
There was no more noise this last time. But I know that it didn't fix itself. I don't have anything to look for anymore and need to know what it could have been, so I can fix it before it comes back. What should I do?
I let my car warm up every time before I drive it, so the problem wouldn't be a cold engine, would it?
Thanks H-T

Had my brakes checked at Les Schwab's the day before actually. They said that there good.
Sounded like the noise was more from the Differential of the Transmission housing.

Well it has to be something that moves with the engine if you push the clutch in and it still makes the noise.
Odds are its intermitten. Which is the worst of all problems IMO.
Heres a list of possibilties
1. Altnator pulley
2. P.S. Pulley
3. Crank Pulley
4. FLywheel
Your Axels wouldnt be the problem if you step on the gas in neutral and it makes the noise worse, so Anything axel related is gone.
Hope that helps

Just replaced all of these but the flywheel.

If I push the clutch in and step on the accelerator it doesn't get louder. Stays with the speed of the vehicle.

Ok well then tranny or even motor should have nothing to do with it. Mabey rebuild the CV joint and see if that helps. You did say you found a leak somewhere.

Yeah found leak on the CV Boot. Going to replace the whole axle.
But don't know if thats going to be it.

was your a/c on during this entire noise? my car makes a loud whining horrible noise which is coming from the a.c compressor which means its going bad. when i accelerate it gets louder. like a bad sounding supercharger.
Can you describe the noise more? Was it a higher pitch whining noise? If so, it might be from the alternator. The snow may have been causing a grounding issue and that's why it went away when you brushed it off. This kind of noise is also RPM-sensitive, so it will get higher pitched when your rev's go up.

Well, I had turned it off and on thinking it could have been a possibility. But the noise stayed more consistent with the speed of the wheels and not the RPM's of the engine.

Well it was more of a sound of medal on medal. like the brakes but clearly came from the middle of the engine bay. It was like I could hear it well enough that I could almost see right where it was coming from. (Kinda like watching a jet in the sky. How if you look at it flying. The sound of the jet is a little behind it.) It was coming from around the diff. part of the tranny.

I don't think it would be. I'll reset it though to be sure.

Have you replaced the axle yet? If you had a tear in the boot and you had no CV grease left, that might explain the metal on metal sound. It's possible it was binding up and "unstuck" itself for a little while.

I will replace it then. I was just waiting till I get the money. There like $415 from the dealership and I only replace my parts with Honda Genuine. Thanks for your input. I believe your correct.

Im having the same problem guy... i know excatly what youre talking about it sounds like its almost coming from the gear box or something the sound it makes is similar to that of an electric car or something. i just recently had my trans rebuild and lately ive been noticing that same noise the only problem is that im not sure if that noise was there from before i had the trans rebuild i just bought this car not too long ago so im familiar with it.... did you ever figure out what was causing the sound?

I have not figured it out yet. The sound went away, and like 2 weeks later came back for about 4 miles then went away again.
How about yours did it go away or is it still like that? If it went away did it come back again?

-CV boots contain grease, not fluid.
If the noise is connected with speed of car, and not rpm at all...this eliminates 90% of possible problems...and means it's something on or around the hubs. I'd think it would be brake related or bad hub bearing. The only thing in the middle of the engine compartment directly related to movement and not rpm...is the axles or intermediate shaft.
What exactly did you find all over the firewall? Was it grease...or was it fluid? If it was fluid, it's from something else and you need to get that diagnosed and fixed immediately. If it was grease...replace CV boots or bring your axles in to a parts store as cores and get new ones.
Anyways, back to the noise. Jack up each corner of the car...1 at a time...and manually spin each wheel to test for noise or any sort of resistance when spinning.
Axles are usually only known to make 1 sound when going bad...popping when you turn. Transmission is ruled out if you can press the clutch and the noise is still there while the car is moving...no gears are engaged or moving.
I drove on axles with torn outer CV boots, NO grease left at all...for several months before replacing them due to the popping noise occurring when I turned left. Never once did I hear any grinding, whining, or anything of the sort.
