Default help!!!!!!!!!!!! oil looks like it turned hard in motor (PICS)

ok here goes. i bought a 2000 usdm b20z2 at the local salvage yard. it was from a crv that was flipped upside down. when i went to see it, the guy started it for me and it smoked pretty bad for like a min and then it stopped and idled perfect. when i got it home and took off the valve cover, i saw the ugliest thing i ever saw in a motor. the entire valve trane looks like this

i knew the oil pan was going to be just as bad so i flipped the block and found this.

QUESTION:1. how did it get like this?
2. how can i clean it out of the short block without removing the crank, rods and pistons? (i am going to use my old head, not the scary one) can i spay something in the and just flip the motor upright so all the poo poo falls out? (its on a motor stand) please help. i need my car by monday and i wasnt expecting this. thanks to all who took time to read this very long post.

The proper way to clean it out is to rip the motor completely down, piece by piece, and clean it very well, piece by piece, then reassemble, using a new water pump, oil pump, timing belt, and main bearings and rod bearings.

Good luck!

Quick run down....rebuild the whole motor, have the head goto a machine shop, and reassemble using new parts throughout.

i just bought all that stuff for the motor. i was just about to put the oil pump, timing belt kit, water pump, oil pan gasket, plugs ect. on the motor before i put it in the car.

QUESTION can i flip the block right side up with the crank facing down and spray something up in the block from the bottom while turning the crank? will that knock some sludge out? im not even thinking of using that old head. my old one looks like it was just rebuilt and is as clean as can be. ill post pics. im thinking as long as i can get most of it out, i can use something in my oil change to clean the rest out. maybey do another oil change after like 50 miles. or maybey a motor flush.

No, this is not good. Ask your self, how will I clean the oil passages in the block, how will I clean the bearings, how will I clean the head?

Follow that advice, it'll save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

Here's some advice given to me, "the short cut can sometimes make for a long run"

any type of cleaner may harm the bearings. try to get the big stuff out then run Mobil 1 oil and change it a lot. you be suprised what this stuff can clean

Okay, I understand where you are coming from. While you can't do a complete rebuild. I would at least take the bearings (rods and mains) out and wipe them down with a kitchen rag and soapy water. Then dry them completey and re-assemble with assembly lube. Also, I would change the rear and front seals.

great advice and i did buy both seals. i just dont want to unseat the pistons/rings. if i do i wouldnt want to put the old rings back. upon further inspection, i noticed that most of the sludge in the shortblock was on the pan and the part with the screen(i forgot what it called)lol. there is a little on the main caps and even less on the bottom of the pistons. as long as i use my old head, pan, ect.,i should be fine. i just ran into another problem which i will address in a new thread for future searching references.

your not going to "unseat" the rings. all u have to do is make sure u mark the rods so u know which cylinder they came out of. make sure every bearing goes back in the same place etc.
