get that flat black look...
.. how is it done? i'm painting a cover tomorrow, and want a flat black look. all i need to do is sand, primer and black paint. and that's all huh? no clear coat or nothing right?
depends on how you're doing it, but the *right* way to do it is to just do base and clear like normal, but you add a matting agent to the clear.
i work with a guy thats got an old rabbit gti that he spraybombed flat black. it looked good for about a month, but now it looks like hell. if you do the matte clear thing; it will look, and stay looking more uniform.
good luck

DA is right on the money.. a matting or flattening agent in the clear gives you all the normal protection of clear, but wont be shiny.. Ive been seeing more cars painted this way lately.. Seen a couple ferraris and porsche's ad mercedes.. I think it looks great..
I have a question that will work in this thread. Can you wax a car that has a matte clear coat? What about buffing that clear coat to get rid of orange peal etc.?

base/clear with flattening agent is the best way IMO

me and my painter were just talking about this as an option. He told me if you add the flattening agent to the clear, then waxing it is no problem at all, and that the surface would be smooth as a regular paint job, and the same care needed. I have actually since decided against this option, just passing on the information I was told.
