When should I change my front brakes - 23K miles?
I thought my brakes were grinding so I took them to my mechanic and he said I shoud replace them. Does that sound right for a car with 23k miles on the factory brakes?
I have 30K miles on my car and my brakes are just fine. Plenty of pad left. It all depends on how you drive your car. If you're in alot of stop and go traffic....you might need them replaced. But 23K seems a little early if you're not too aggressive with your car.
If he thinks your brakes are low....have him show them to you so you can see for yourself. Don't just take his word for it.

I have this same problem. front brakes have been grinding for the past month. I really don't drive my fg hard. I checked the brake pads, but both still have the padding in good condition. any suggestions?

Brake pads are one of those things you can't cheat on. Either they are worn down, or they have life left. The thickness of the remaining material determines that. And, if the system is operating properly, there are wear indicators built into the pads that will squeal loudly when they get too worn.
That said, the rotors on my Acura suck. Any wetness still on them after I park the car will result in either stuck pads, (a nice clunk when I first move the car), or nasty grinding noises until I wear off the layer of rust during the first few stops.
