CRX needs a tune up for cross-country trip!
Well I plan on driving my beloved CRX all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles. Unfortunately I have a JDM YS1 transmission (Very close) coupled to my B16... So my question is this; What transmission should I get or what gears should I install in my case - for a quick road car with a long *** 5th gear for highway cruising. Also what else do you think I might need for this 2000 mile trip. I need new tires as well for my 15" Mugen MR-5's if anyone has any suggestions.
One more thing I'd like to request is a suspension setup for someone who races on a road course. I already have Progress coilovers but my car just plows and doesn't really handle how I'd hope it would. If anyone knows how to fix this please help me out.
Any help is greatly appreciated guys

well the ys1 is pretty awesome already (except for highway milage). why not just swap 5th gear for an LS. or the final drive but then you lose you the fun lower gears.
are you trying to get better milage or what?
you might spend more on improving your tranny than just driving there and saying to hell will the mileage.
what are you doing anyway the cannonball run?

I'm just doing it to do something. My life is pretty dull right now and I need something to getaway so I'm doing this. I only really want a longer 5th so I can cruise at higher speeds instead of being at 6k rpms the entire trip
I have a ys1 and put the ls 5th in, It drops the rpm a LOT. I think new from honda the parts were a little over $100 for both gears
Would you recommend the change? What else should I do while my tranny is out? I want to get as much as I can done at once.

hey im planning a little road trip myself. I live in LA and planning on driving to Colorado with my B16 EF with an S1 tranny. I know it would be load *** hell when im crusing on the road but can the s1 handle the distance?
I did the drive from Seattle to Columbus, OH (~3,000 miles) with a YS1 transmission on a high-compression LS-VTEC in my '88 CRX Si in the heat of summer ... I basically never took the car past 80 mph except to pass but the car handled it pretty well for the most part. (Crossing the Rockies in 95 degree heat caused the car to suffer a bit but it survived.) I would never drive for more than 3 hours at a time without stopping and I still managed the drive in four days with some sight-seeing so I think you should be fine with your set up now.
America is pretty freakin' sweet when you drive through it, and I took quite a bit of pictures so I really don't think you need to modify your transmission just so you can bomb on the straight parts. Half the time you'll be stuck behind people anyway.
If you want to "do something just to do it" before the trip, I would recommend a few things; First a full tune-up. Plugs, wires, ALL fluids, new pads/shoes depending on your set up. Also the new tires should be considered but I purposely used shitty econo-tires + donuts for the drive. Here's my car in the Badlands in South Dakota:
If you have a sunroof, I would recommend you getting this working should be a main priority also. Lastly I would plan what you're going to carry with you along the road, and position it well within the car so you have easy access to the rest of your luggage. I did have to get under the car once and brought basically all my tools, some spare parts, jackstands and a mini-jack, and extra oil, oil filter, JB WELD, Hondabond, coolant, and plenty of rags for maintenance along the way.
Besides all that for the car, for yourself bring a tent, lots of water, a sleeping bag, a camera, and some suntan lotion, (I had my shirt off and the sunroof open the whole way, trashy but worth it.).. If you've got AAA you should get a Trip-Tick, unless you've got a GPS unit.
Sorry for the long post, I could rave and show pictures of the drive all day. It was a great experience and I'm sure you'll love it (and bond with your CRX in the process!)
