i had a mr2 when i was 17, i sold it for that reason! every mr2 ive worked on since then has been a nightmare too. they put the oil filter 1mm away from the turbo, so even oil changes are a pain in the *** b/c the filter always is seized lol

lol, i do most of my work afterhours. i've been pencil pushing more then anything lately. not having a lot of drive to clean up my bench after working 12 hours.

so the water tanks are pretty much done and i welded the pipe for the inlet. the inlet tank and both water tanks are welded to the core as of tonight. i probably won't get a chance to work on it until monday, but we'll see. i'll snap some pics tomarrow.

the old setup was pretty good too. big though. on a 95 degree day tuning for about 2 hours and runing tap water through the core produced a maximum of 60 degree intake temps. the car was only runing 10psi at the time, but it still held up pretty well to heat soak.

i'm hoping we can get some similar intake temps without all the weight and size.

the old core was an air to air core and this one is air to water, so i'm hoping it will work better.

i used pulse on the tank to core welds. thats 190amps with a background of i think 40~50amps at .08 pulse frequency. i was using 3/32 4043 rod.

tank welds are 1/16 4043 with peak current at 110 amps. material is .090 6061 t6.

Is that Air-Water Intercooler going to be large enough to support near 1000whp??

yep. thats a garrett core rated at 1000hp for a/w purposes. its the same core that precsion uses for their a/w units.

a/r is a ton more efficent about sheading heat, so the size doesn't really matter. problem is trying to combat heat soak once the water is heated. for a drag car its fine, but daily driving can be more of a challenge.

i'm going for somewhat the same setup...
i'll be counting on a big heat exchanger... it's a bit bigger then my normal radiator... and i'll constantly have a fan blowing at it...
i think that'll be enough to counter the heatsoak...

thats usually were people screw the system up. they put a oil cooler or somthing super dinky on it and expect it to work. so as intake temps rise, they start saying a/w is bad for daily driving.

fittings play a big roll. make sure that the fittings chosen are restrictive in bends.

at my old shop a s/c nsx came it with 180 degree charge temps. he was running straight coolant and some wierd fitting on the pump.

we swapped them out for better fitting and switched to water and water wetter and it dropped intake temps i think 40 degrees @ wot. he also wasn't running a very large tank on the system, so there wasn't that much capacity in the first place.

I have a couple of questions...

1. What does a unit like that cost after the reservoir and core, etc?
2. On a smaller setup, would an A/W be efficient enough for a DD 450whp setup??

i can't give my cost, but they retail for around $350 for the core.

cost of a good a/w setup is around $1k usually.
yeah, its way more efficent then an a/a setup, however heat soak is tough to combat.

Only one comment on this one mikey! When you test for leaks use a air regulator and cover your nuts!

Looks good. I will call you tonight, been busy!

i probably won't test it with 150psi this time, but i'm still covering my nuts. i've been lazy the last couple nights, so no progress.

so i finally got some time to work on the intercooler again. the exit for the intercooler has to come off one side of the core and there isn't a lot of space there, so i decided to go a different route then just a box.

i used half of a 3" .120 wall tube and some flat sheet. the sides of the tank are actaully at different angles, so i had to twist the plate to fit.
