Well if the damage is more than the car is worth. Also if the estimator is a jacka$$ and says you car isn't worth poo poo. They call the car a total loss.
When they call it a total loss to get any money and get the buy back rights you have to send them your title and they change it to a salvage title.
Once you get the title back you need to get a head lamp and brake lamp inspection and a smog to get it registered again.
And thus a salvage title is born.

Haha
Sometimes the car doesnt get a salvaged title, The last car I had the insurance paid out because someone hit me and they did not take the car nor the title. fixed it and sold it with a clean title. So the carfax thing doesnt always work
So I have also heard this. I think the insurance co screwed up on those that don't get it.
Also, Good reading between the lines
I had to ask myself if $1000 is worth getting a salvage title and the inspections. My answer was no. So my crx has a little damage on the hatch and rear corner. Was estimated at $2200 worth of damage and they said the car was worth $1200. I got a friend that is going to fix it for $500.
I wasn't even driving I was parked in my lot.

You dont have to have a salvage title. Just keep harassing them sooner or latter they will pay out.
my 91 accord with 125k miles was hit I settled at $4500 and the car keeps a clean title. Also they considered the car to be a total loss.

Usually that works but when there is already a bitch on the other side of the phone...Bitching does not work. I even tried to bitch to the estimator that did the estimate and his company would not let me talk to him.
I sent reciepts and photo's too. Plus it's too late now it was over two years ago. I still crank call the bitch. They probably have about ten claims that are fakes. Yes, I turned off caller ID.

This may vary from state to state, but i was always under the impression that you only got a salvage title if the car was totalled, and then a different owner bought the car. I have had cars totaled, but bought them back and was never issued a change on my title. I also bought a totaled car, which came with a salvaged title, good deals, but it can screw you if you have to report a major claim on it.
The car i bought, we happened to insure the car with the same insurance company that already paid out on it. My dad worked at a body shop, so i fixed the car for cheap, but had a small claim on it, and then a pretty major vandalism claim on it, and then i totaled it
oh man, once they found all that out, they tried to screw me over big time on it. Once they realized they had paid out over 30k on the 18k dollar car hehe. Oh well.

No, I got a salvage title on my EM1, even though the punk bitches who stole it only took some goodies (cluster, Mugen front strut tower bar, EK9 valve cover and oil cap. They left my Ek9/Momo SRS wheel, expletiveed up my Eclipse AVN (pulled the screen off trying to take it), etc. Further, the left the hood up with the valve cover off and it rained in the motor all night.
That scared the **** out of the repair shop, who told my insurance new motor = $7500 so they totalled it. I got a check for $10k and the car (would have gotten near 13k if I had let them keep the car) and a salvage title. Already got the car running. Need to fix up some **** (the morons cut my OEM fog lights wires but left everything, but left the lights. Left my EK9 headlights but took the crappy silverstars I got from Wal Mart (put in when on my Raybrigs burned out - had the new set sitting on my desk). Took the filter from my K&N FIPK but left the intake itself (dented the **** out of the heat shield while trying to take it... probably couldn't count on both hands and toes how high far it was torqued down). Took the key for my 17" SSR Competitions (wrapped with fresh Toyo T1S) out of the center console and left it on the passenger seat. Left the rims, of course. Maybe no cinder blocks available?

Ah well, had to vent. Anwyays, got the car running (they snapped the ingition off and ripped the **** out of my head steering column and center console). Will do the inspections next week. I was the original owner since 8 mi on the odo and now have the salvage title. Will be scheduling inspections probably next week.
All in all, it probably worked out better. My engine bay looks stock (stock bar, stock valve cover and stock intake).
I miss that Mugen bar. Anyone see an EM1 cluster with a custom CF trim (got it from Vapor when his got totalled) with ~120k on it, watch out. Have a small engraving on the back of the Mugen bar, but i imagine the creeps will have scratched it out. Next time, I'm taking my dremel and gonna do some custom VIN markings or something on all my parts.
Car and all parts now at my parents garage. If/when I bring it back, gonna have all sorts of security upgrades - multiple battery backed up sirens, etc. (I had grown complacent, I have to admit) and be ready to pop a .45 ACP in the fools next time.

I feel ya bro. I have an EM1 EBP too. It got broken into, and they stole the cluster with CF bezel, and climate control, and stock SI cd deck. then they took the tweeters, and stole my tennis racket, and gutted my trunk (idk why they did that) also took like random **** like my toyo tires keychain, radar detector, greddy gloves, and jdm license relocater. i saw my hood ajar when i checked out my car. didnt take anything from the motor and i noticed all they did was grab a hanger, and clipped the power door lock to open the car. freakin beezies.
make sure your insurance is setup for an overall value. If you were to get in an accident and total it out, again, they won't want to give you as much, since it's a salvaged title now.
