Default How well does paint take to carbonfibre bonnets?

Just curious, really.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a carbonfibre bonnet, but I generally prefer my car to be discreet in its appearance. So if I were to get one it must be painted. However, I wonder if there are any common problems associated with painting carbonfibre such as poor adhesion, chipping, difficulty in colour-matching, etc.

As long as you prep it right, it will come out like any other material.

wouldn't it look a little lumpy due to the weaves?

I wouldn't think that the weave would show since the resin smooths everything out, but it does bring up the question of consistency of the resin itself (i.e. ripples that would normally be hidden by the weave pattern?). I suppose careful preparation should eliminate that as a problem though.

That should not be a concern if prepped correctly. Fibreglass should smooth all that chit out.

Speaking of fibreglass, why not get a fibreglass hood instead, comparable weight and half the cost. If you are concerned with strength, I think both types of hoods would break in an impact.

I haven't looked into fibreglas because I've never seen a fibreglas bonnet that retained the stock appearance. They've all got scoops or vents or some other unnecessary visual excitement going on.

Why take a lightweight carbon fiber hood, and weigh it down with paint? Isn't that kind of defeating the purpose?

Weigh it down with paint? Paint does not weigh that much and adding that weight is still WAY lighter than stock.

When you add it up, paint weighs a little bit Den... but I suppose you're right, it still is lighter than stock.

True..but taking a poop probably saves you the weight the paint adds.

Here's an idea, I think this is what Realtime R's do but why don't people cut off the under support of their stock hoods and put some hood pins on

Paint does not way much...plus you also have to consider that your stock hood has paint too so it will still be lighter.
