I wasn't scared of that before... But seeing this and hearing others have done the same makes me a bit concerned about doing it.

wow, this is eerily reminiscent of what happened to my hatch last summer. long story short, my hatch glass shattered, and i wasn't even trying to remove the wiper motor or anything!
background: it was really hot that day, and i was parked outside of the garage because my brother's project Datsun 280Z was in the garage on jackstands. it's my day off, i go outside to move my car into the shade, and i see what looks like water all over the rear windshield (like it just rained or i just washed my car). turns out the glass was completely shattered, only being held in place by my tint. in shock, i looked to see if there were any rocks or anything that might have fallen/hit the glass or anything; no signs of rocks, pebbles, bb's or anything. in fact, there wasn't even a dent to indicate a point of impact. however, the upper and lower corners of the glass were blown out, like something shot out from the inside of the car at the four corners of the windshield. i was stupefied.
theory: so much heat had built-up in my car that the hatch just burst (it was 100+ that day, and i didn't have my windows cracked, except for the hatch, hahaha
). i guess the tint was a magnet for sunlight that day, and i had chosen the wrong place to park heR (no shade or anything). i didn't even have any soda or anything else pressurized inside the car; there was nothing that could have exploded in there.
anyways, if you want to salvage your hatch -- just in case you want to sell it or re-use it -- and remove the glass with little mess, i suggest taping it up so that it stays in "one piece" when you take it out. that and the amount of little pieces of glass in your trunk will be minimized. less to clean up, and it's a lot safer, no cut hands or knees.
removing the hatch is fun, but realigning it is not. as stated above, there are four bolts under the headliner that attach the hatch hinges. you also have to disconnect the hatch struts; i think there are 4 c-clips to pry out (one at each point where the struts attach to the hatch and body) to disconnect the struts. when you get the new hatch in position, just hand tighten the hatch hinge bolts (don't tighten the bolts underneath the headliner all the way) because the hatch has to be lined up. i had one friend sit in the trunk aligning the new hook/trunk latch striker with the latch when i closed the new one, and that same person tightened the hinge bolts after me and another friend pushed the hatch into place to align it. don't forget to play with the rubber stoppers to align it vertically as well.
good luck with replacing it
just out of curiosity: did you buy a JDM hatch without the hole for the wiper motor?

i will next time i'm home. its sitting in a box in my garage lol. it was actually fairly heavy, i remember thinking it would be pretty insignificant, but it wasn't nearly as light as i thought it would be.

think I'd sooner buy a new hatch without the hole in the window than remove it and risk doing that.
did the aerial delete about 2 years ago, that was nice and easy.
