Your friends cant tell the difference between white and black smoke?

White smoke = Burnt coolant, which could mean a blown/worn headgasket or maybe a cracked sleave.

Black smoke = Running rich, check your o2 sensor, anything fuel/igniton related be sure to check too.

Blue smoke = Burning oil, which could be a number of things icluding rings, seals, leaks, etc.

Chances are it was black smoke (unless you tend to use alot of oil) and its just running a little rich.

Nahh he probably meant getting it done isnt cheap. The part itself is not that bad, but the labour it involves is a whole other story.
