Default problems at the worst time....

so im about to start school.. and its expensive. im totally done for cash and all of a sudden my car gets hurt... im not positive on whats wrong. i know its more than one thing. but if anyone can shed some light on what might be the problem from most likely to least likely itd be appreciated..

i own a 90 crx si (d16a6)

first problem: when i come to a stop my idle seems to sit at normal idle then drop down to sometimes 100-200 rpms and then pop back up.

second problem: i noticed today i was burning oil (blue smoke), when i get home the dipstick is BONE dry...

third problem: my distributor makes grinding noises around 1500 rpms..

oh this also happens just a week after i quit my job and recieve my last paycheck...

thanks for any help guys

No#1 clean IACV on back of intake manifold with carb cleaner.

#2 Change PCV valve and check oil level everyday until it stays at the right level.

#3 Bearings in dizzy are bad. Need new one.

The first two are cheap $5 for a can of cleaner and $10 for the PCV valve.

The third is going to run you $150 or so. You can take a chance and grab one from a junkyard. It might save you alittle dough.

Sometimes Murphy is a bitch. You know Murphy's law don't you.

don't forget to check the FITV under the intake...it's in the FAQ. free fix for your idle. try the yards for a distributor. blue smoke could be a gasket, rings, or valve stem seals. just keep an eye on the level and be good to your car until you can take the engine apart and rebuild.

as far as hondas having problems...my idle acts up occasionally but it's always a quick fix. this thing always starts and has never left me stranded (knock on wood)!! 240,000 miles. even when the hub and wheel bearing had a foot in the grave, even when my check engine light was on. my girlfriend hates it, but this is the best car i've owned BY FAR

just take it easy, and try to solve each problem individually. Maybe you can lube your distributor or something ????

i took it into a honda specialist that i trust. n are also free to take a look at ur car. for the idle they said its not uncommon to see this in an older car. they said unless its actually dieing then don't worry about it. as for burning oil. they said that i should burn at least a quart of oil every 3000 miles.. which i thought was really alot.. but i do have 300k miles on my car. the distributor problem they said id probably have to buy a new one.. sooo basically i brought it there so they could tell me everything i already knew.

d16a6 doesn't have a fitv. does have an iacv however. you could try cleaning this out with carb/brake cleaner or replace the iacv altogether.

looks similar to the one on top here

Its on the back of the intake manifold. two bolts hold it on, and then you have to pull off the coolant lines. i suggest pinching those off with pliers of some sort before you remove otherwise youll get coolant everywhere.

should note though that usually problems with the IACV cause idle to fluctuate up and down from the normal idle of 700-800 up to like 1,200 or so. If its staying at 700 and getting lower i cant say for sure if thats an iacv problem or not. someone else may have some insight on it. still it doesnt take very long to swap one of these out or clean the screens just to rule it out as a problem.

I cleaned mine without removing the coolant lines. Just hold the motor part(The can on the end) up so the carb cleaner doesn't get into the motor.

Also remove the rubber gasket before you clean it. The cleaner might harm the gasket.

Try the PCV valve it's only a couple of bucks
