buying a junkyard car
Okay I've used the search button but didn't find anything. Does anyone know what the process is on buying a car from the junk is? I mean say you buy a shell from the junk and wrench on it (project) and get it to run, how do you go about registering it? Has anyone ever done this? Please help me cause I'm considering on buying a project car from the junk and yeah it is in good condition and worth it. The body is straight, the car was a theft recovery. That says it all.
Yeah, if the car comes with a title it won't be any different from registering any other vehicle. If you do happen to get that car running, however, don't expect to get full coverage on it since it did come from a junk yard. However, liability will still most likely be an option. Good luck with your project!
im not really sure... but one thing to watch out for is a junk title... theres salvage and junk titles in california... and they are not the same though often considered the same.... its my understanding that a junk title cant be insured in california.....
so u might want to look into that and verify the facts

The technical term for junk title is Non-Repairable. A car with that title technically can't be registered for legal road use through DMV and tampering with VIN's is a serious matter. I have heard of being able to buy a Non-Repairable titled car, sell it through a lien sale, and then it can be registered through DMV. Don't quote me on that just something I read from a guy trying to sell a Non-Repairable ITR shell in SoCal.
Yeah I'm well aware that the car is gonna have a salvage title. So how can I find out if its gonna be a junk title or not? Should I get the cars VIN info and ask dmv? Also in case the car doesn't come with a title, is it gonna be hard to register the car with dmv?

I asked my friend that has bought a car from a junkyard and he said it simple and easy as long has I get the cars title with it. He also said when I get the title to apply for registration for the vehicle.
CHP will inspect turn signals, brake lights and check vin numbers to check for stolen parts. You may also have to do a brake and lamp inspection at a certified station. I see you're from Delano, what junkyard are you buying from?
I buy alot of cars from the Junkyard... Its cheap and when you do, most the time they will let you take some parts for free!! I bought a 98 GSR for 3k clean title and got the motor for 1800! Running 98 GSR for 4,800 clean title... Can't beat that! Good luck to you sir!
in VA, if you dont get a title with the car, then its nearly impossible to register the vehicle. if its a junk title, its possible to register it, but it takes a while. as the other guys said you have to get everthing inspected and yadda yadda yadda. another option is swapping the vins. but thats illegal... good luck on the project tho if you buy the car
Thanks fellas for the 411 on buying the car to answer all-mtr-teg's question I'm buying it from Bakersfield's many junk yards. But I was worried i wasn't gonna get it cause my friend messed up my DA cause he tried to used my distb. and ended up not so he put it on backwards and my timming jumped 16 teeth on the intake side. I'm just gonna buy a B20 for my DA and use it as a work car. He said he'll go half'ers on a engine so 250 for a JDM B20? Not bad.. But as for the 00 Si I'm still planning on getting it this pay check! I can't wait!!!
Buyer beware.
In CA, it is very difficult to retitle a junk car.
inspections, bunch of DMV fees, smog, and all parts must have receipts or bill of sales.
From experience, take a bunch of pictures and make sure the junkyard gives you a bill of sale.
Best of luck.
Plain and simple just look at the title. If the title is clean then it's just like any other car purchase. If it's rebuild/salvage/junk just stay away from it unless for just parts.
You can put any motor into a any vehicle in the world.......now on a legal note you cant ref it its no where near street legal but here in cali all you see is b20 DAs plain and simple just dont get caught
