Default premature water pump failure

my friends water pump is making an extremely loud noise. he's got about 60k mi on a D17A1, 2002 EX (also he drives like an old lady...)

i've never seen a water pump fail at this mileage outside of being messed around with. just curious if anyone knows these particular motors to have problems like this, or are prone to failure.

Have I heard of it happening? Yes. Would I say that it's happened often? Definitely not.

I would say have the dealership listen for the noises, and see what they can make of it.

oh i know it's the water pump. i've got a bit of experience as a honda mechanic, we just didn't get many of these cars in the shop where i worked.

i'm just trying to find out if "yeah these things fail, you just got one of the bad ones..." or "no they don't fail hardly at all, something else may have lead to this failure."

i'm hoping the dealership will take car of it for him but i'm not counting on it. if we have to, we'll put a new one on ourselves.

I don't have the TSB's memorized, but I've got the list in the FAQ's. If you want, check through them, as there might be something for it.

I dont ever recall seeing one for the water pump, but you're just going to get bearings that fall below the average life span by nature. At 60K, do the timing belt and H2O pump, then forget about it until 150. Figure in the time you'll have the car, you gotta do the Timing belt job once.... you just have to do it a little early.

Im confused though, you say its a D17A1, but its an EX. That doesnt compute.
