Default crx shift problem

i bought a crx with a ls motor and the guy said it had a bad tranny but he wasnt for sure.the problem when i got it was. when the car was in neutral it would act as if it was in gear.i could only get it in 1st,3rd,and 5th. it would not take off in any gear but 5th.i thought it was the shift linkage.i think it has a d series linakge on it.i put some washers at the bottom of shifter because it was really loose.after i put the washers on, i could get it in all gears but 4th.when i put it all the way in 1st,2nd, and 3rd i could still not get it to take off but when i pull back a little bit where its not all the way in gear and not all the way out of gear it will take off, but i have to ride the clutch.when it is in neutral and i let off the clutch it cuts off like it was in gear still.
any ideas.im pretty sure its just the shift linkage.i was about to order a hasport or avid linkage but i thought i would ask on here first.
thanks ahead of time
