Default How far should I space downpipe from oil pan?

I'm throwing together a downpipe right now and I originally thought I should space it as close to the pan as possible (without touching) to maximize ground clearance. But now I'm thinking maybe I should sacrifice ground clearance and leave a larger gap between the pan and the downpipe for cooling purposes. I'm not fond of the idea of an oil heater.

Thoughts?
