Default timing retard question

My car is almost out of the shop, It's an h23 vtec with h23 crank and rods, I got the type s pistons so I did reaserch and compression will be at around 11:5.1 The highest octane here is 91 and not 93. They told me to retard the cam gears to prevent detonation due to the high compression, supposably called a "tune". Well I need to know if anyone here know how many degrees to retard the cams since higher octane gas is not available here where I live. I'm using stock ecu, no hondata or nothing else. Also, will my car benefit from an MSD ignition system?

you should be fine without doing any timing retard on the stock ecu. it uses relatively conservative timing to begin with. U dont need to do anything with the cam gears. If you can, you could either retard the base distributor timing or running a colder plug.

are you running an OBDI or OBDII distributor?

i would recommend you look in to a nice tune in the near future tho.

There's not a lot of shops that know what they're doing here where I live so I basically get ideas from Honda Tech only. they had told me I had to retard the timing at high compression or use higher octane gas. since I only have one choice, I thought the cams were supposed to be retarded some degrees. They told me you might here a "ping" noisy. anyways thanks for your advice, looks like nobody else saw my post. What do you think about msd anyways?

From what i've searched out is that theres no point in getting the msd or anyother external iggy because mine 5th gen already has one, and if it does make a bigger spark it doesnt matter cuz even a little spark will start a fire.

hope that makes sense
