Default Help needed - think garage doesn't have a clue

I have 99 accord 2.0 v-tech, the engine emissions light came on took it to local garage hey have said that the diagnostic shows a 'v-tech system failure' - and there asking for repair costs between £600-£3000 - they haven't specified a particular part so not sure where the costs are from - but they say that the timing is out, it's misfiring and running rich - any ideas what may be needed and where they are getting there costs from - got a feeling I'm getting ripped off?? Any help will be appreciated.

never go ahead with any repair without getting a detailed quote of whats being done and always get a second opinion, especially if you feel uncomfortable with what someone is telling you.

the vtec system is actually pretty simple, and the parts aren't too expensive. 3000 is absolute rape

this interests me. a system failure in VTEC... sounds like baloney. if vtec fails you just end up with a non-vtec motor. the only time i have seen part of the system affect the engine opperation was when some shop rebuilt the head on a GSR and reassembled it incorrectly. the result was valves and rockers in vtec all the time but the ECU wasn't in vtec until 6k or whenever it comes in.

i would cetainly recommend a second oppinion.

There is no "vtec system failure" code.

There is a vtec solenoid or vtec oil pressure switch code, but your talking a couple hundred bucks at the most and about 10mins to change either of those out.

well may i recomend taking off the vtec silinoid and cleaning it with brake cleaner. Also if that fails try to change your oil pressure sensor for 30 snaps at autozone
