Default Transmission advice.

Well I just got my car out of the bodyshop and the transmission is making a whining noise when i'm on the highway. It's more pronounced when it's cold and gets softer as it warms up. I took the car to the dealer to get the problem diagnosed and they said that it's the output shaft bearing. It'll cost approximately 2600.00 to repair including a new clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. I can't help but think that I could replace the whole trans with a good used one for cheaper. Any thoughts?

Yes you can find a clean used trans with low miles for a fair price. I say don't do it at the dealer. Find a independent Honda mechanic that is recommended and you'll probably save money.

Your advise is appreciated, however, I don't know of any good honda mechanics in Dallas. If anyone knows of any please let me know.

Holy wow...2600? Do dealerships think people are that stupid? Well if you cant do it yourself and there are no honda mechanics in your area..i really dont know what to tell you.

Are you mechanically inclined at all? The only thing holding people back from DIYs i think is intimidation. Get a helms and go at it.

option B

buy an AP2 tranny, cuz ull like it better on ur AP1... sell old tranny to someone who knows how to fix it for cheap and will make a $$$ return on it... in the end ull have a better tranny and wont spend half as much as u would gettin it fixed...

u can get an AP2 tranny for around $1500 and you can prolly off that tranny for $800 or so... so for $700 ud be in great shape... hope this helps, and ill keep my eyes open for any trannys... ohh and check out s2ki for the texas section in case anything is close to you...

Thanks for the info. I just wish I knew where to look for another trans. I will check s2ki though.

Yes I am mechanically inclined but I don't have the time to mess with it. I can do a swap in an afternoon but I've never cracked a transmission open and don't really want.

Don't go to the dealer to get it done. You'd probably save money going to a performance shop to do it.

are you certain that its the transmission? If not i would try to get a second opinion...i know that when my last differential was going out it made a loud winding noise.

don't open any transmission. Just swap it out, if you try to open it up or have a tech open it up it will never be the same.

The dealer actually put the car on the rack and had it running with a tech in it. I was there and we were listening with a long rod at both the diff and the trans. The diff. was quiet and the trans was making the noise right at the rear area near the drive shaft.

If you do go looking for a transmission, try and find an AP2 transmission. I believe there's a 4% gear reduction in 1-5 and a taller gear for 6th IIRC. So it'd be just like putting gears in the rear end, while still having a good highway gear.

wtf?

of course people with no rebuilt knowledge shouldn't try to repair a busted trans but don't make it sounds like rocket science.

it just all gear, shims and grease stuff
