Default What tires should I get?

Once Springtime rolls around, I plan on putting new tires on my 16" Rota Slipstreams. Any suggestions for best bang for the buck?

I am going to be doing a little autocross hopefully in the summertime with my uncle. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I personally love my Toyo T1-S's.

They howl a little bit on the highway but they're a really great tire on dry or wet pavement.

First of all, assuming this is for your '93 Civic, the size you need is 205/40-16. 195/45-16 will also work.

You don't say whether you will be using these year round, including occasional snow in the winter as well as the rest of the year and in autocrossing. You also don't say whether you are looking for the best grip, period, or whether you also care about how long they last and how much they cost. These are all factors that affect which tire is best for your needs.

Which of these categories do you fall into?

a. People who want the maximum traction on dry pavement, and don't care about anything else. These are usually people who sometimes use their street tires in autocross or on the racetrack or in brisk drives on curvy roads. The best tire for such folks IMHO is the Falken Azenis RT-615, which is available in 205/40-16. These tires don't last all that long - treadlife of 10-12K miles is typical - and they are only so-so in rain. But if you only care about dry grip, they're the bomb. $81/tire at Vulcan.

b. People who want good traction on dry pavement, but also want good traction in rain, and who DON'T use these tires in snow (either it doesn't snow where they live, or they have separate tires or another vehicle for winter conditions). These are usually people who may use their tires for everyday driving, but they also care about performance and are willing to pay more for a better performing tire. The tires I most often recommend for these folks are the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, which is available in 195/45-16. Excellent grip on dry pavement, excellent in rain, and last a reasonably long time (25-40K miles). $96/tire at the Tire Rack.

c. People who want good traction on dry pavement, but also want good traction in rain and also care about value (purchase price and/or treadlife), and who DON'T use these tires in snow. These are usually people who use their tires for everyday driving and are looking for "bang for the buck". The tires I most often recommend for these folks are the Kumho SPT, which is available in 205/40-16. Very good grip on dry pavement, are excellent in rain, and last a reasonably long time (25-40K miles). $55/tire at the Tire Rack, but they are out of stock (fewer than 4 in stock). The Dunlop Direzza DZ101, at $78, is an alternative in 205/40-16.

d. People who need to use the same tires in snow during the winter as well as in moderate to warm temperatures the rest of the year. These folks need all-season tires, which are a compromise; they have the flexibility to be used in a wider range of weather, but they're not as good in winter as true winter tires and they're not as good the rest of the year as summer tires such as those mentioned above. For these folks, I recommend the Kumho ASX in 205/40-16. $76/tire at the Tire Rack. And if you're looking to save money on an all-season, the Sumitomo HTR+ isn't bad, and it's $51/tire in 205/40-16.

All of these tires are reasonably priced, and are the best you can get for your money in each of these categories, IMHO. You can get them shipped from places like Tire Rack, Discount Tire (whose higher prices are offset by free shipping), and Vulcan Tire.

I don't. They're all-seasons. If you don't need all-seasons, the other tires grip better. And if you do need all-seasons, the Kumho and Sumitomo offer better grip for a lower price.

Those are a lot more expensive than the SPT, but the SPT is better.

If you want to spend WAY too much money for your tires, get that one. It costs way more than the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, but the Goodyear's performance is way better. But hey, it's your money, you're welcome to throw it away.

LOL indeed! You'd better find your tax return because your tax return is the form you need to send to the government. It might make more sense for you to look for your tax refund, the money they send you back after you mail them the tax return.

Not for long. They're discontinued.

I can do that too:

Goodyear!
Kumho!
Yokohama!

And it's just as meaningless as naming any other brand.

The MX isn't a bad tire; it's just sort of in between the categories above. Not as sticky as the Azenis RT-615 or the Goodyear, doesn't last as long as the SPT or Goodyear. However, it's not a good recommendation for the OP because it doesn't come in either of the sizes he needs.
