Default The cost of upgrading to D16A6 form a d15

My daily driver has been buring oil for years and now the rear main seal just started leaking. It's time for a new engine.

I'll be paying someone else to do the labor. But when i look at the cost i'm starting to think of just getting another d15 instead of the d16a6. I might just opt for a D15 with EX exhaust and CAI-- save some money.

Is it adviseable to run a d16 with a stock DX exhaust? I would think not.

The A6 would require a new exhaust, another ECU & MPFI. Plus I'd imagine that the engine itself would cost more. I'm not sure that i want the extra horse that bad.

thanks for reading,
any advice would be appreciated
(and yes i know some of you out there think that both the d15 & the a6 are slow as molassis)

How much are you thinking a a6 would cost if you go to a junkyard and pull a motor it really wouldnt be that bad honda heaven around here i think he charges 4 hundred installed and thats including the motor but it would be more to convert to MPFI. i think i paid 90 for my motor and the only thing it didnt have was the intake. If you could do some of it yourself it would save some money..

TD,

Thanks very much for responding. But i don't have the tools, capability, time or desire to do the work myself-- not right now, anyway.

I'd rather spend the extra $ on a jdm engine from a reputable importer which is more likely to have low miles. And more likely to be reliable.

I suppose i could get a d15 now and i'll have the option of doing a multipoint swap later.

May as well find a sohc ZC (basically a stock JDM D16A6). I believe they are 118 hp. As for the exhaust, there shouldn't be that much difference between si/dx. I wouldn't worry about it.

I just can't see a D16A6 costing muc. If nothing else, you could probably get one from a someone swapping for $100 or so. Or, as others have said, you can upgrade to an even better motor. If you don't want to go B/H/F/K, you could add a D16Z6 SOHC VTEC to the list of possible, cheap swaps. Although power output is slightly less than a ZC, this motor has MUCH more available in terms of mods. And since it is a USDM motor, part availablity will also be better. As for doing the swap, it is really not as hard as you think. And you would probably be REALLY surprised if I showed you the rather small collection of tools that I use to do swaps. In other words, you don't need much beyond some basic sockets and wrenches. And finally, it is MUCH less hard than you think. You could certainly EASILY learn how to do it. Or maybe you know someone who could help you along the way. Perhaps the most intimidating part for MANY people is the DPFI-MPFI wiring conversion. But you can always just buy a conversion harness here. This will certainly cost MUCH less than paying someone to do the job.

dont worry about the exhaust...

as far as the engine, theres a guy on ebay who sells prewired dx-mpfi engine wiring harness's for like $185, makes the swap sooo easy, its only a few wires. i think his user name is nigaphan

If you can find the a6 for like a good price; id say go for it; or jsut fix up your d15... and convert later if you want to or idk, its gonna cost money one way or another...

You will pay the same no matter what for a d16a6 or a d15. Just do the A6 and get it over with!

What kind of car? 4-door/hatch/crx? I recently bought a running EX for $400, if you have a 4-door, that is all you would need to find is a good 4-door EX donor, it would have everything, exhaust and all.
