piston ring wore out...d15b7 head on d15b2 block?
94 dx m/t
so my engine is bogging and i change the sparkplugs to find oil all over one of them, i'm guessing worn piston ring. my uncle who is a mechanic says i should just get a new motor because all the labor is not worth it. i'm not looking for a b16 or anything, just a replacement d15 or d16, if i want a fast car i will have to dump way more than i can afford into it. what do you guys think? rebuild or replace? also my uncle suggested that i buy an engine with a warranty, but i found one here on h-t not too far from me for $150 with 90k on it. discuss.

have your uncle do a leak down test. If its something simple like say valve seals, then you could just keep that motor. Rebuilding a motor, if you know how would be a nice way to go, assuming everything was still within tolerance. Then you are getting a brand new motor. Buying used is always a risk, i've had good luck, but i've had friends get junked motors before. I'd do a little work first to make sure the motor is junked.

what about driving it? obviously i haven't driven it since i got it home after i found the leak, but i would need to get it to my uncle's shop about 15 miles away to have him look at it. it's got almost 180k on it so i don't think rebuilding it would be a good idea.

When you say oil on the spark plug are you talking about the ceramic part? If so that's a valve cover gasket leak and has nothing to do with a rebuild. If it's on the electrode part and you can verify that the rings are bad IMO you are much better off getting a used motor. Rebuilds can cost around $500 even to do it cheap (oil pump/waterpump/timing belt).

well, does it run better with new plugs? If so then you are fowling out the plugs, is a check engine light on. Or, you could have the engine on its very last leg, and just a matter of time before it seizes up altogether.

there is oil on the electrode of the plug as well as a little bit on the ceramic part. it does not run better with new plugs because i'm assuming there is oil leaking into one of the cylinders. i replaced my valve cover gasket as soon as i got the car 9 months ago. the check engine light has never come on, maybe the bulb is broken, because i would think with it messing up this bad it would trip the engine light.
