So the story starts with me looking for a daily car, crx 5speed being the target to drive around and hopefully not worry about it being stolen. I have been searching since December for it about everyday and every internet sites that was posting cars for sale.
Me being **** about the car’s condition and strictly unmodified for daily driving, with only $1500 to play with, search n search endlessly for about a month n half.
Days went by and viewing cars daily, I came to the conclusion that I’ll never find a crx in decent condition with a clean title and not modify
. With that in my head I made up my mind that i'm fine with a salvage title crx, since it was just a daily. Still days went by and a month into the new yr pass, I still couldn’t pick up one! Cars I looked at were either too beat up, too modified, half-*** finish projects, primed, stories and mysteries about how this and that happen to the car and why’s that weren’t explain thoroughly. As I continually search I also came to a conclusion that crx’s are hard to come by and if you were to, people are asking way above Kelly book value for it and it ain’t even in the condition that Kelly put it, it’s actually worst. Me, the type not wanting to hurt anyone feelings, wish the seller well with the sale and continue my days searching
.
Feb. 07, 2008 8:30pm, while searching thru the net I find myself at craigslist for the third time of the day (I usually search that site 4-5 times a day). About 10 newly ads were post the time I checked cragslist. Seeing that 4 new crx for sale ads was post, I was excited to view them. The first was some modify 90 crx with a swap asking for 3k+, I skip that
. Next post was 1999 crx posted for 1500 with no pics, I skip that as well. The third was 89 red crx with pictures asking 1500, I viewed and was disappointed due to lots of dents and rear interior was missing
. Last crx posted was a 90 also asking for 2200 with pictures, so I viewed and like was I saw and read. It was a white crx with clean title, first owner and adult with 133k miles on it. Body was clean, no dents, moldings all there, everything was all align, interior mint and all there even the cargo cover was there and look mint as hell! Only flaws I would say by looking at the pictures is that there was noticeable body work been done to the car, the primed gray on certain areas of the car gave that away, interior color is blue (that’s just my preference cause I prefer black interior in all my cars), and the price, it was above what Kelly book price it for. Overall it was a great car for a daily, so I made the decision to spend a little more for it. I email the person since he/she didn’t put a contact number; I ask if they would take 1800 cash with my contact number
. Since I was already excited from that ad, I decide to check out the 89 crx for 1500 with no pictures. It stated “Honda CRX 1999 asking 1500 but will take 1200 before Friday Night/ Saturday Morning (need to leave town) call 000-000-0000 [blocked for privacy] major tune up in early mid 2007 time belt, spark plugs, water pump, the car is in fair condition inside and out, red, runs smooth, 230k,smogged, clean title, manual, will not reply to email, car is park on Beach and Second st. in Anaheim/Stanton, no accident, after Saturday afternoon it will be for sale for 1500 will be able to show anytime/ call me anytime”
after reading that, I told myself damn why not I’ll be saving a few hundred, so I call that number. A guy picks up and its noisy as hell in the background, I ask “hi, is your car still for sale?” guy replies “yes, it’s still for sale, but I am unable to show it to you right now” I say “WHY???” He replies “I’m spending time with my family and friends for our new yr and it’ll be rude to leave” I reply “my fault, so tell me more about the car.” Then out of nowhere this guy started to sound like a infomercial, explaining everything he stated in the ad and more even explaining why this is a great car what not. So here I am on the phone with this guy and laughing in my head, like what the fugk just happen, but staying on track what i’m looking for I ask a few questions I needed to know and clarify. I ask “Is the title in hand? Is it under your name? Clean title?” He replies “Yes I have the title, yes, it’s under my name, and yeah it’s a clean/clear title.” Then I was like Koo, then he goes off again saying it’s a great car and what not again…lol. Then I ask “Oh! Does the car have a full interior with the rear not being gutted/strip?” he replies “yes it has interior, what you mean gutted strip?” I replied “oh nothing, so everything’s is there from the seat back to the trunk?” he replies “yah yah every things there” So finally I was like KOO! And ask him “are u sure u don’t wanna get rid of the car tonight, I got 1200 cash rite now” (actually I had 1500 in cash stash away until I found that daily) He replies” (silent moment)…….ummm no, if your serious about buying this car beat the other guys (four others that wanted to see it) here at 9am tomorrow and we’ll talk” I said “what!?!, other guys (this ad was posted only 10-15mins according to the guy) oh, ok…I’ll fosho hit you up before that and be at your place exactly at 9am tomorrow.” He replies “ok see you tomorrow! Bye”
We hang up and i’m like damn I gotta beat these other guys to this car! Prior to that night I was out drinking and what not and didn’t get home until like 4 something in the morning.
Friday morning, 10:45am (I don’t work Fridays) Ring…my ring tone goes off, but I ignore it since I don’t know the number and 2mins later my voice mail tones goes off, I also ignore it. As I was about to fall back to sleep, I said “FUGK!!! The car!!!”
Then I was like FUGK, the car is sold by now, so I was mad and disorientated a lil from the night before and was just gonna go to sleep again. Right before I was about to call it a morning, I pick up the phone, check to see who called and I was like damn that number look familiar, then I compare that number to the number I call about the car last night and it match, so I was like mannn he probably calling to tell me the car was sold as a courteous
, still I check the voice mail and to my amazement the guy calls to see if I was coming down to check the car still, now i’m like damn these other idiots didn’t come thru???
So I get up and wake my grl up just in case I do pick up this car, wash up, and get dress, grab my stash and out the door we go.
On beach turning into second st, I pull up to this faded ***, oxidized red crx with a missing door slash/trim on the driver side.
By now i’m thinking well he did say it was in fair condition and I didn’t c how the passenger side look or the rear. So I park my car got out and walk over to this guy starting up the crx, shook his hands and exchange names and got down to business. I walked the car, no signs anything missing or modify, except for that missing door trim on the driver side. No signs of any accident
, knock on the body to see if any bondo been applied (none)
, No signs of rust (none so far, couldn’t check the underbody)
only minor bumps n dents on the door moldings, few scuffs on the front bumper and rear
. So now I'm thinking ok, it's in fair condition for the exterior, then he ask me “you want to test drive the car?” I replied “yeah” Clutch feels good, car idles right, even the A/C is blowing cold and then we’re off
. We cruise the neighborhood doing 0-20 pulls, going thru 1-3rd gear smoothly without any probs. Then out to beach to test out the rest of the gears, 4th and 5th are smooth, no grinds or any problems putting them into gear
. So we head back (at this time while test driving the car I was looking around in the interior, everything was all there even the cargo cover and stock radio, working too, overall the interior was in fair condition too) I park the car, testing the reverse while at it and its koo too. I ask if I could check the engine and he agreed, so I pop the hood lever and open the hood, to my amazement engine bay is pretty clean, motor as well, no signs of any bents or re-welded spots, and a bonus there’s a K&N air filter charger system
. (I didn’t mind that, since its legal and only a small modification) On the down side the head seem to have a leak, since there were wet oily spots on the tranny and block
. So I ask what’s been done to the motor by him and the previous owner if there was any or any records of anything done. He said that the previous owner (female, late 20’s) had new timing belt, new plugs, new water pump, and a tune up. So I guess it got its annually 100k miles check up. Now I ask if I could have a moment with my girlfriend and see what she thinks.
Now I and my grl are talking and I tell her the details and what I think of it. I ask for her opinion and she seems to like it so far from what she heard and didn’t care for the car fadedness
. Then she says” its hot babe” then I realize maybe it’s the heat that’s getting to her, she usually don’t like me picking up cars like these cause I tend to put all my time into them and sometimes not enough for her…But then again its my daily and I don’t intend to work on it extensively for that reason, I tell her that, but we know how it all goes for us car freaks.
So I head back to the guy and start negotiating. I ask “how much u wants for it again?” he says “1200” So I give me a look like (shssshhhhh) the dealers do when u goes trade in your car and they ask how much you want it for. Then I started to state the facts about the car condition, the hatch doesn’t lock (i’m surprise he doesn’t have any probs with thieves just opening his hatch and taking whatever) so I have to fix that, the A/C control is fugk, got cracks here n there on the dash. I show him the engine and pointed out the leak on the head and told him I will probably need to tend to that in the future and it could be more then just a leak from the inside. By now the look on the guy face is like damn ok… and I tell him I got 1100 with me rite now and I’ll take it out your hands. He replies back well the car is a good commuter and the price is good and i’m selling it 300 cheaper then what I want for it cause I want to get rid of it before I leave and not worry about it when I get back if I don’t sell it. Then I tell him well I got 1100 now and I’ll take it outa your hands. He pauses and thinks about it for awhile, while I keep telling him 1100 1100 rite now…. Receptively sticking it to his mind and finally he says the magic word “OK, I’ll Take It!”
So I ask for the title and there’s another problem.
The title he got isn’t not under his name. The paperwork’s he have are the title and a piece of paper with writing stating it was giving away(bill of sales) and 2007 registration expiring July 07 under the girl’s name. He says the girl already put it in his name, but he didn’t do his part, now i’m thinking while looking at the 2007 registration paper, it shows it expires since July 07 and the car has a 08 sticker. So i’m a lil confused by now.
So I tell him since he was gonna be gone by Saturday and not come back in like 2 months and I knew I was gonna have probs with the registration, I ask if he could go to the dmv with me now and get this done. Without a hesitation he agreed and off we go. We got the registration done, I gave him his 1100 and he tosses me the keys, then he offer to get something to eat (On Him!) Of course i’m not gonna pass a free meal and I was hungry anyways.
Drop him off at his friend house after we was done eating and proceeded to pick up my new daily.
In the end I picked up a nice daily to commute without the thought it could be stolen, since its stock and there isn’t anything really a valuable on or in the car, but who knows…a thief will steal just about anything. I’m glad that I waited and pass on other crx’s and was **** about what I wanted in that car, since I will be seen in it. I have no real plans for this crx yet, but will slowly work on the minor probs it has to make it more reliable and viewable for others to picture me rolling. The best thing out of all this is that the car has a clear title!
enjoy the pics
I will post a video clip of how the crx start up and idles later

The floor mats were a giveaway for me that it was female owned in the past so at least that's obvious. I kinda thought 1100 was still a lot for its condition don't you think? Lots of miles, almost a 20year old car, lots of little things that I thought should have decreased the value. But I wasn't the one doing the KBB'in and as long as you're happy, that's all that matters!

But I wasn't the one doing the KBB'in and as long as you're happy, that's all that matters! </TD></TR></TABLE>
Yup!
Thx, you be surprise what people try to sell in worst condition crx's out there then what I paid for and if its in better condition...well im not even gonna bother.

Me too. Now my eyes hurt. But I could see that you were very excited about this one. And yes, clean CRX's are hard to find. Good for you, man.

*** UPDATE ***
Well, I had this car about 2 months. Drives smooth and haven’t given me any troubles (hopes I don’t jinx myself
) I been working on this car only on a few weekends and a few hours only, due to work and precious time spent with my daughter and wife, Did a few mods and a lil tinkering inside and outside the car, just to make it accommodate my style, but nothing drastic (that’ll be in a couple months)
So here I have my Red Crx Dx Ver. 1.0 and the specs to share with the Honda-Tech community.
Interior Specs:
Fixed the glove box – it now closes, rather then hanging loose
Straighten out the A/C panel – It now looks like one piece instead of two pieces
Change out that old stock steering wheel – A Momo Corse now resides on the steering column
Switch passenger side seat – 91 Crx Si seat stays mounted on the passenger side
Pulled out the rear divider w/carpet – empty space (Ver. 1.5 or 2.0 will have something for that
)
Exterior Specs:
Car got its 2nd wash – 04/08/2008
Engine Specs:
Clean the K&N Filter
Flushed out all engine/tranny fluids the 2nd week I had the car – New Castro Syntec Oil, New PureOne Oil Filter, New Drain Plugs and Crush Washers, New Honda MTF with a lil of Lucas Tranny Fluids, Fresh Coolant
Suspension Specs:
Upgraded Shocks and Springs – New HP Tokicos, Used Eibach Sportlines
Front and Rear Strut Bars – Tanabe
Rotate tires and pressure check weekly
Enjoy Pics
