stupid question but: welding magnets what are they for?

Nope, and for tig they are bad. They will sometimes pull the arc.

alright thanks for the quick response man, someone told me it pulls the splatter to it so it makes cleaning up after you're done welding eaiser but i thought it was bullshit

I use them to hold the jigs at different angles, but yeah, they'll pull the arc if you get close. It's a real pain in the ***.
i used them "right angle" magnets when i was building my welding table/bench.. i did not know anything about the magnets pulling the arc or anything like that, but i did notice the magnet seemed to be "formed." after i used it on the bench. it kind of "formed" around what i was welding. ill have to take a picture of it. i was using a mig welder.
as said with tig they will definetly pull the arc big time....i use them all the time for doing rust repair with the mig, makes leveling the panels a bunch easier
