Default Temperature going nuts.

My temperature guage is showing that it's overheating, almost. I can drive doing a steady 30mph, 60mph, 80mph, whatever and it'll be fine, it'll sit exactly where it should. However when i slow down to a junction it'll start to rise pretty quick but only sometimes - then once i move it'll just jump down to normal temp again very fast (and it's not the fan coming on.. the fan works btw.)

Thing is i recently changed the headgasket because the car had a burnt valve, compression is fine 210, 215, 215, 210. no oil in my coolant and no coolant in my oil. No smoke other then the blue smoke from the crappy valve stem seals for the first 20 seconds in the morning and it smokes blue smoke above 6k as well, but it's clearly blue, not white..

Any ideas? it doesn't overheat as such, it'll rise way up about 5/6th of the way for a few seconds then drop down again.. airlock somewhere?

(B18C4.. not losing coolant, no leaks visible.)

yeah that went through my mind as well. I don't think it is that though to be honest, was giving a good reading recently, was always low when i had no thermostat for a few days and now with it in it always reads very much around the same mark and seems to react well when the fan comes on etc.. just seems funny it only happens after i go around a bend or slow right down.

temp sensor man. a car doesn't suddenly heat up or suddenly cool down. not that fast. that's why you can't just shut it off and touch the engine, or start it up and drive on a cold morning, it just doesn't happen. check your sensor first hommie.

aye i think you're slightly reading it wrong. I don't mean it'll drop down to nothing, i mean after it nearly reaches the top of the scale it'll drop back down to normal operating temp (about half way) in like 2 - 3 seconds.

ah, i gotcha, mine was doin the same for a while. and sometimes when i'd take a corner and floor it the needle would go all the way down. my problem was the water pump. and a bad thermometer. but mostly the pump.

It is the wire going to the sending unit, must have a slight break in it or loose connection.

alright, cheers guys, going to check the wiring, get a new sensor and see how that goes.. will be changing the timing belt, tensioner and waterpump in 2 weeks anyway so that'll rule out the pump as well.

When the car's cool open up your radiator. It's probably not topped off. Air pockets can be a bitch.
Same symptoms mine had. Highway driving was fine. But then if I came off the highway and hit stop-n-go traffic or just normal light to light traffic my temp would skyrocket.
Turning on the heat would help a bit. But it ended up having only about half a radiator full of coolant.
Topped it off and everything was back to normal.

i asked my mom's boyfriend, he's a mechanic, he said check your radiator, said the reason it heats up when your not moving is no circulation in the radiator which means a bad radiator or the thermostat is sticking.
