Fields vs. Apex'i VAFC
Any real reason to get the Apex'i over the Fields? Obviously the Apex'i looks better and has cool graphics, but besides that, what features would make it worth getting over the Fields? I tried search and read nearly every thread I could find with "fields" in it, but didn't turn up any comparisons. I would like to do some simple tuning and be able to adjust VTEC, that's about it. I have a chance to get a good deal on a used Fields so thought I would check with other R owners first.
thanks

I have no direct experience, but here's what i've learned/read/etc:
The VAFC has a lot more adjustment points, whilst the fields only has 8 (IE 1000rpms, 2000rpms, etc). The VAFC is a lot easier to tune, more people know how to use it. also, you can get plug in harnesses for the VAFC, dont know about the fields. go with the VAFC, its proven on this board i would say.

Only reason I'd get a Fields unit is to remove the JDM speed limiter.

I don't think you can remove the speed limiters with either of these devices. You can only reposotion the vtec switchpoint (plus play with air/fuel ratios of course).

vafc offers a bigger range of modification increments

You can remove the JDM speed limiter of 180 km/hr (~112 mph) with the Fields VTEC unit.
Reid - who hopes we won't have to settle this with a duel...
What kind of duel are we talking about: A good old "smeeliset fart" contest or a "kick in the *****" contest. I get first swing either way
I was not aware of any 180 km/h speed limiter so I never had the need to remove it.

Some of the tuners on this board (Like SGT and a few others) prefer the fields. IU have heard of Vafc burning out and malfuctioning, or throwing weird codes on cars. I have no direct experience with them but I have a V-afc and its been fine for me.

The only "direct" experience I have is from two ITR owners, one who had a apex and the other who had a fields. They said the apex was throwing codes and had other problems, they preferred the Fields. But it seems like the Apex would win just because of more adjustability and features if that is true. Anyone with a fields controller here want to chime in? Budman?
I would get a Apex over a Fields if the price were the same, I just have a chance to get a Fields for a good price, hehe
i used to have a Field's vtec controller in my B18C1 95 DX coupe. it threw the map code for the longest time. i found out that the shop that installed it only crmiped the wires, as opposed to soldering it. After i soldered everything, it threw no more codes. Its real easy to adjust also. I never had any personal experiences with the VAFC but it sure does look hard to tinker with.
I have alot of experience with both the Fields and the VAFC, been tuning them for a long time. If you just want to change the Vtec crossover point, the Fields will do the trick, you can back it up with additional fuel via this unit, but if you want to really fine tune the crossover point, you should go with the VAFC. For example, let's say you wanted the crossover to take place at 5800 RPM, and you wanted to plus or minus some fuel at 5700, 5900, and so on, you'd need the adjustability of the Apex unit. Also, it has a peak hold function, which I've found helpful, but maybe useless to others. As far as the VAFC throwing codes, I have heard of this a few times on OBD II cars, but usually it's just installation errors. The Field unit will do the same thing if installed incorrectly. One of the reasons the VAFC unit did so well, at least in my area, was because alot of the hybrid cars (mostly the older EF's) were having problems with the Fields unit malfunctioning, causing major hesitation and bogging, so a lot of people put out money for the Apex unit. just my .02
Thanks for the input dude, I appreciate it. hmmm... it's not like I'm ever going to be doing heavy dyno tuning, hell, where I live there aren't even any dyno's near by. My main goal is to drop VTEC so it's easier to stay in speed in 2nd gear on the autocross course, and help with shifting on the track and staying in VTEC. You think the Fields would suffice for those purposes?
yeah, it'll work for you. You'll have to get some seat time to get a feel for what amount of fuel to add or delete in order to compensate for the new switchover point. If you set it too low, you're going to bog, so watch it. Also, mount it in a cool place, my friend mounted his just above his stereo, and it got so hot, that it malfunctioned. good luck bro
