Default cut the tip off muffler, power loss?

I cut the tip off my muffler, now my engine bogs alot more on lower rpms.. in fact I lost alot of power throughout the band. I have 2 civics, and did the same on the other, it was the same thing. I put a bolt on tip on the other and seemed to gain some power back, and it also dealt with some of the noise.

both mufflers are magnaflow ovals. Is it because the exhaust gas velocities are now slowed because there is no tip? this is the only logical explaination.

however i couldnt see how this would affect anything at all. but strangely it does, on both counts

your not going to gain or lose any power by cutting the tip of a muffler, it's just the sound making you think your going faster.

I mean it might but I'm 100% sure your butt dyno wont feel it. The noise its making is making you think your bogging or going faster. Btw why would you even do that?

I seriously hope you didnt hack off your muffler tip to add HP. How much did you cut off? Just the tip after the muffler, or more? be more specific please.

i cut it off because it was sticking 5" past the bumper. I did that as a temp solution untill i could find a shorter tip.

You didn't say whether your exhaust was a name brand system exhaust or cobbled together muffler shop special. The name brand system exhaust should benefit from some tuning. A tuned exhaust is exactly the right length so that the pulse returning from the tip back to the exhaust valves hits at the instant in the cycle so as to cause some scavenging. It's possible that your exhaust was tuned before you cut the tip off.

That should not affect the exhaust system at all, unless something else is going on by coincidence, which can happen in rare cases.

i had a skunk2 catback on my crx and ive gotten 4 tickets in 3 years...not too bad but 81 bucks a piece adds up. i took it to a shop and they put a chevy o.e. muffler on it and its dual tip now. looks exactly like an si muffler and it's not loud at all. i mostly hear the engine now and vtec doesn't sound near as good . the best thing might be to just run the dual tip si muffler b/c va sucks with exhaust regulations.

i really hate VA sometime. how much was it total when u took it to the shop. (parts and labor) yeah i got 3 different tickets at that 1. defective muffler. i was like WTF 2. illegal muffler i knew that was coming lol. 3. illegal equipment. my only problem with that is that i am losing money like crazy. and to tell you the truth is really not that loud. i have American cars roar by me with there straight pipe and the still feel the need to get me instead. also do u know the exact regulation on after market exhaust? i ment i have a muffler that muffles the sound and itsunder 95db but the last time i was pulled over he was like NO AFTERMARKET EXHAUST was allowed.

why didn't you just take it to a muffler shop and have them make it look right instead of you hacking your muffler. other dudes are right..you lost back pressure.

I put a tip on there now...so its back to normal now which is wierd. I guess the exhaust flow wasnt as controlled as when it had a tip on there.
