why would you need a spring compressor to install coilovers?

Which coilovers?

You won't need a spring compressor unless you're trying to install coilover sleeves on the stock shock (which is a rather bad idea) or unless you need to remove the stock upper mount to re-use it. Some coilovers come with their own upper mounts.
