do your brake lights work?
There is a shift interlock under the center console you should hear it click when you step on the brake.
Check your brake light switch, the other problem could be the interlock solenoid.
they can get gummed up with crud from coffee and cola spills in that area.

I was thinking is there a switch under the brake pedal. This is an intermittent problem, when this happened last time I just had to press the brake harder and it would go into drive. Thanks for all the help.
