SOHC question. valves hit pistons if timing belt breaks?
i know on a B series that if the timing belt is off a few teeth or if it breaks then the valves smash the pistons. is this true on the SOHC motors also?
Still holds true, the fact is it doesnt do it b/c its dohc, but b/c of its lift. If you think you have done this try a leak down test if your not sure, or just pull the head.
yes, it is true. Although when we changed my buddys timing belt on his b7 the first try we were off two teeth and it still ran...like poop, but no harm was done to the motor. Why? Did it happen to you?
My buddys z6 snaped a timming belt at about 4k RPMS. It ran when we replaced the belt but It idled with a sputter. I think that a piston may have nikked a valve. Do you suppose that not being in v-tec saved the motor. Anyway thats my 2 cents.
well i know that it has nothin to do with how many cams a motor has, but i know for instance a ford escort SOHC motor can break its timing belt and still be fine, its not an "interference" motor.
i was just curious if this was the case with the d series.
im wondering cuz my friend just bought a 97 DX hatch, and when u crank it, it sounds like its spinning fast like when theres no compression. so i figured maybe the belt broke, so we looked and it looks new.
he bought the car non-running. so i figured maybe the people who did the t-belt job, didnt line it up correctly.

Its an inerference motor if you have the time off that head will gernade. It doesnt matter if its in vtec or not the valves are still hitting the piston when its coming up tdc(top dead center).Get the timing right asap. You can also go to autozone and get a cheap timing light and see if its off also.

car wont start. just sounds like it has zero compression, so a timing light would do nothing for me right now lol.
well he bought it to swap it anyway but we wanted to see if we could get it runnin for now

You can't necessarily tell with d-series engines Some people say there inerferance some people say non. My buddies z6's timing belt broke at about 4k and it didn't bend no valves at all no nick on the valves or nothing. When the whole time some kid was yelling from the background that were going to need a new head. I simply asked him how many hondas has he worked on he said none, the little rich kid drive's a STI, i told him i don't care what he drives it still don't mean nothin. We put a new timing belt on head gasket lined it up and started and still running. Sad part is, is that we did it in a parking lot...
