help!! how much would it be if i brought it into a shop?? for the timing belt. cuz i have read the forums an its seems like ppl just take these things off no problem. i dont know anything about motors. plz help me.
If you know nothing about cars/engines all these problems are going to be over your head!
Timing belt is a BIG project! Not hard once you have done it once or twice, but rather difficult for a NEWB!
Wheel bearings are about as difficult as replacing any other suspension related part - such as a caliper or ball joint! Not super tough but you would need alot of guidance AND TOOLS!
A shop will usually charge about 4-500 for a t-belt in my area. Bearing prolly $200 - and the idle problem could be alot of things so it is unknown!

Yeah, about 400 dollars with install and for the Timing belt.
Timing belt replacement and water pump replacement are usually done around the same time, so unless he's replaced it since...one might be needed as well.
How many miles does the car have? Trim, as in S Si 4ws? What year is it, price?
Unless you're buying a 5th gen, Prelude's are old models. Be prepared to either learn how to do a lot of work yourself, or shell out money to have shops do it.
It's true, with proper routine maintenance Honda's in general last a long time. BUT proper maintenance such as timing belt, water pump, rotors, breaks, oil changes, calipers, suspension, distributor, alternator, main relays etc. All the parts that have been known to cause problems after a given time will all need to be replaced. It costs money...

92' had a jdm with 60k on it put in 20k miles ago. he wants 4,400.
has full exhaust, headers, cold air intake. new o2 sensors, new fuel pump. new rims an tires. new paint.

okay, so the engine has 80,000 miles or so on it. Not TOO bad, but if the engine was dropped in at a shop they SHOULD have replaced the timing belt before dropping it in. If they didn't, I can only imagine how half *** the swap was done...Timing belts should be good for 50,000-80,000 miles...( usually done around 75,000)
I'm assuming they haven't done any maintenance to the 60,000 miles JDM engine, look into doing a timing belt/water pump service.
Also, how many miles does the body have?
4,400 is a little steep for it being a 92 with a different engine. Good thing for buyers of modded cars is that they actually lower the price. I'd offer 3,900-4,000 since you'll have to spend 500 bucks for sure.
Also the idle could simply be the throttle body. You can probably do this yoursef by messing with it ( unscrewing and screwing it) there's a " how to" if you decide to purchase the car. If not a throttle body doesn't cost much if you're going OEM..

oh ok. So all he knows is that the car's idling a little high and things the timing belt may have skipped a tooth or two?
Well, a timing belt being off could affect the idle, but there's a few other things as well that can do that. Most likley a vacuum leak. Check vacuum lines, throttle body and EGR valve.
Why is he selling it? ( at least why is he telling you lol)
A timing belt can be "fixed" adjusted back to the right place at a performance shop for an hour or two worth of labor. ( 75-90 bucks an hour)
In my opinion you can probably find a better deal out there for 4,400...
If you do decide to buy it though, find a reputable shop or at least a performance shop that does good work and tell them to diagnose the idle, they're usually good about finding the problem when compared to big chains and can replace parts with aftermarket more affordable parts...

well yeah dude!
haha, get it for as cheap as you can. Bring up the point about how you're going to have to go through the trouble of finding what the problem is which could be costly.
You don't want to buy the car, fix it, and in the end spend 5 grand for a 16 year old car bro...
that WILL run into more trouble in the future. Prelude's are gorgeous, sexy, rare, amazing cars, but you gotta maintain them, luckily we have great forums like these :D
Good luck though, you can always get it, find out more, report back and get more help/ research the forums to see what different things do.
I also gotta bring up typical wear problems which you can use to lower the price:
Check for "prelude rust" meaning look for rust in the quarter panels and rust in the sunroof. Check for Oil leaks, and the color/smell of the exhaust fumes...
Lower that price down!!!
No bawling though, anything around 2,500-3 grand sound good...

2 grand for your car is a steal! No doubt, but good luck trying to find anything else out there that cheap, especially a 4ws model.
I'm just saying that most people need to shell out some money for convenience. Location is key dude.
I know you can find an amazing deal if you're willing to travel but when you're finding locally, you take what you can get and you know you won't find many preludes for 2 grand in the condition yours is....
