timing questions here.
I have a 1988 crx dx d15b non vtech. First question is what is piston one? I have been told by many that it is at the crank, while a couple have told me it is at the distributor. The headgasket was done recently, the tensioner, and new belt, etc. What is marking I should be setting the crank pulley to, I set it to the middle of the "111 1" marking, and the cam pulley to the up mark tensioned and turned it over. After it didnt start I checked everything fuel, spark and compression. The compression at piston 1 (what I thought was at the crank) was 0 psi. I took off the valve cover and set the cam so that at the crank the valves were closed, and when I lookied that was the "up position". Then I stuck a closehanger in the sparkplug hole and foung when that was at the top, which was around the "111 1" markings. Then I took a compression tester and removed the gauge and hooked a air compressor up to it and air came out the muffler and the throttle body.
So what I think might have happened is that the valves got bent in the process of possibly setting the timing improperly in the begining of the job, or something else that I hope is cheaper which is something I hope you guys can help me with.
Fyi the head is newly rebuilt by a shop, all parts known to be good.
Thanks a lot.

piston one is closest to timing belt. 4-3-2-1
4 and 1 will both go up at TDC. to set the crank to tdc the mark farthest to the right gets lined up with the arrow. 111 1 <--------
if u got no comp then something else is wrong. poss broken ring or bent valve.

...sorry, but vtech, makes house phones...
