are coatings really necessary on a 480whp motor build?"
haha...mighta just answered my question then. This piston dome and skirt coatings that builders offer nowadays. My buddy helping me build the motor thinks I'm nuts for paying $200 for it when he's built and tuned many a 600-700 whp cars that lasted just fine.
No they are not necessary, there are plenty of cars making tons of power without coated pistons and I havnt seen any numbers proving that it helps. For a build on a budget I'm sure its fine to skimp out on some coatings. FWIW you can get wiseco's with an anti friction coating on the skirt from the factory.
My Wiseco's came with it, one of the reasons I went with Wiseco among others, but no its not necessary there were 480+hp cars before the coated piston thing and there are still plenty out there now without it.
nah your fine... i got my domes, skirts, and bearings coated just for an expensive piece of mind
i mean some people will argue but i havent seen a well researched/educated (jeffery evans) style post that says that the benifits are more efficent then not having a coating @ all.

I have just heard from a lot of people I respect that coatings can have a down side as well. I guess I'll skip on them. It'll save me a decent amount of money in the mean time haha

what was the down side?
what was the down side?
Only downside I've heard from a few of the competent engine builders on here is that in theory, coating the pistons make them cooler and therefore not the hottest part of the bottom end anymore which can cause hot spots (leading to detonation) in other areas. But that is just theory and I haven't seen coatings ever be the direct cause of any engine failure. Honestly I think the more scientific view is better applied here and that is "heat moves from hot to cold", and with that said a piston-coated engine should run just as cool if not cooler. It's really more of a piece of mind thing because I've seen plenty of 7-800whp four cylinders that run for thousands of miles without coatings. The tune is way more important for reliability, so if you're on a budget as most of us are, the money is better spent on a great tuner (evans, xenocron, tony1, etc.) than an all coated motor with billy bob tuning it.
yea that is exactly what I heard as well about the hot spots and detonation. And as there have been plenty of engines making way more power than I'm shooting for, I think I'll be ok without them. Evans is my tuner, so I'm not worried at all.
get the mahle pistons or wiseco if you want budget coated pistons.. for the money and lower power levels they are great
an experiment for some of you to do if you can get your hands onto this:
-JE pistons non-coated
-JE pistons coated
-Use a propane torch and burn the top of non-coated for 3 minutes---take temp via a laser temp gun at random parts of the piston.
-Now do the same with the coated pistons.
compare them and let us know which one is cooler overall. we know that there are certainly other factors that contribute to piston temps, but this experiment will still prove a good point.
I have some laying around and if i find time, i'll post results
