Default Service Manual on CD, Worth It?

I just got a 1998 Accord. It has a few problems: brakes, power steering pump, etc

Is the Service Manual on CD that you can get on ebay OK?

Or do I need to bite the bullet and fork out the $ for the set from Helm?

The CD version is a scanned copy of the paper manuals

Having the actual written Manual would be easier to take out to the garage/driveway. As well it wouldn't hurt to keep it in your car. Never know when you might need it.

Plus if you search hard enough you might be able to find a download site for an interactive PDF copy of the actual Honda shop manual. Just remember that it is against the law to distribute copy written material in any manner. So if you happen to find a link keep it too yourself and don't post links to it on this or any other site.....

Sounds like the ebay CD manuals are illegal.

What about the Mitchell1 eAutoRepair online manual. Looks like you can get a subscription cheap on Amazon. I assume it is legal. Anyone ever use them?

Either buy the proven Haynes/Helms or don't really.

Both of those are good service manuals.

The CDs are digital scans of the Haynes/Helms - and for the most part are *illegal*

I've never heard of the Mitchell thing so I would suggest sticking with the tried and true.

I wasn't saying that the ebay ones are illegal. Just buy the paper manual and "find the download source" for the PDF one for your computer.

Why do you want a digital copy so bad fear of paper cuts......

I have bought factory service manuals for all the cars I have owned previously. I prefer paper over computer screen also.

But money is a little tight right now. Full set of manuls would be $100+.

I can get 4 years of subscription for $17 on Amazon. If the Mitchell manual is any good then that is the cheapest way to get, hopefully, complete vehicle info. They do have updates too, which the paper manual wouldn't have.

They don't really update manuals that are for 10 year old cars?

Honestly I would hold off. If you're seriously concerned just buy a cd version and print it.

I fixed that for you I can't believe you put haynes in the same as helms

Haynes are ok for small maintenance jobs but thats it. If you plan on doing anything in depth get the Helm manual(s). Pricey but more than worth it.

as Ghost stated before, don't post any links or copy written material here as it's against forum policy.

If the CD's on eBay are just a scanned Helm manual, why in the world would anyone pay for one if it could be downloaded for free?

Also, I've looked at the PDF version and compared it to my bought Helm manual and as they are VERY similar there were some differences. I don't recall what exactly but there were a few things I noticed.

Yeah the CD7-9 PDF version that I have is first release and it's only for the 94-95. It doesn't incorporate anything in relation to OBDII codes or troubleshooting and some other very small stuff that is easy to figure out.

They probably don't update now but maybe up until 5 years ago or so they may have done updates. I wonder if the Helm manuals are updated.
