Car: 1991 Honda Civic Si
Motor: D16Y7 block and head everything else is factory.
ok so here is another alternator and batt. issue. i searched and pulled up a bunch of threads other ppl have posted to see if i could get some help. i picked up a few things but im still having the same problem!
i have put a re-manf. alternator and a brand new battery in my car. ive made sure all the wires are clean and plugs. replaced any fuse that looks bad and have checked, checked, and triple checked everything! my car still dies. its like the alt doesnt want to recharge the batt.
im going crazy cause i cant fix this.
one thing that i have also done is had 2 different alts. in this car both had the same prob both were new re-manf alts. i have a 1991 civic si with a D16Y7 block and head but everything else is what came from the factory. the question is do i have the right alternator in my car or would this matter? the alt i have in right now is off of a z6 motor. that is what was on it and i replaced. i also tried the alternator that advance recomends. it was a little smaller and still gave me the same problems.
i know this post is all thrown together but im late for work and i have to jump my car off in order to get there
PLEASE HELP! anything will be better than nothing!
thanks,
Tom

So..the alternator will allow the vehicle to drive as far as you want, or will it die after a while?
Have you checked the output from the alternator to see what rate it is charging at(voltage wise)?

You need to check voltage from the alternator as has been said.
I presume the OBD is the same for the ECU and wiring you're running.
It is not unheard of to get multiple crap reman-alternators from some autoparts places.

yes as long as im driving it wont die. last night it was raning and the wipers were slow and my lights dim a lot but when i turn it off it wont turn back on. the crazy thing too is sometimes it just cranks right up.
the voltage is like 12.24 on the alt.
yes the OBD is the same.
i would hate to dish out the money for the new new alt and it not fix the problem lol

If the pulley is wrong and it isn't spinning a peak efficiency that could be a problem, but I'm by no means an expert on this sort crap.
It could be, but I don't know. Depends on a lot of factors, many are out of your control - like manufacturer quality.
I'd get a short tester and check your car for shorts, may have some old wires that are seriously drawing.

It sounds like the alt is the problem. You can take it out and have it tested at a parts store usually.
The dimming of your lights is caused by low battery voltage which is the same reason your car will not start.
Don't worry about this"short tester". Get your alt. charging for now and you probably will not have any other problems.

so just to wrap everything up incase someone comes across this thread one day. my issue was the alternator. i talked to them and they swore up and down the alternators they have been selling me have been just fine. they ended up giving me another one. the same thing happened 2 days later, car died. so i figured there was something else wrong with the car. so i took my car to a local shop who does only hondas and i can trust them. they called me the next day and said it was the alt. i couldnt believe it. so they put a brand new Denso alt in and my car is running great! no probs, knock on wood! so anywy once again advance is crap. if u are having issues it is probably becasue u got a "world class" remanufactured alt from advance. thanks everyone for the help and good luck to anyone that reads this with the same prob!
