HELP: Acceptable replacement for Honda coolant?
A hose connected to my IACV popped off of the throttle body tonight and almost ran my engine dry. I think I have some Honda coolant in my trunk or in my garage at my other house, but I'm not sure. If I don't, is there some acceptable replacement, or is Honda coolant even one of those "must-have" things like Honda Z-1 trans fluid is? I need to get this fixed tomorrow.
Ive never discriminated about what coolant I use but you'd be fine in moderate temp with just water ....but when you do fill it up with what ever fluids you use remember to burp your system
green stuff works so does yellow stuff........ just don't use gm dexcool as that **** eats gaskets.....and does NOT like to be mixed with normal coolant

Heh...that'll work really well in the winter!

Green stuff is good, you can flush the system and use watever you want. How about the stuff that changes colour from purple to yellow when its time to change, lol.
Obviously you guys don't understand the point of using coolant in the system. Pure water will rust the system out, not to mention that the water pump is lubricated using coolant. You must have never noticed that when you got coolant on your fingers and rubbed it it's slippery which is the way it's supposed to be. Obviously if it gets anywhere near colder in your area and you have pure water in your vehicle, good luck with keeping the engine from overheating since the water will be frozen. Or better yet, let me know when you end up with a few cracks in your engine block.
But in all honestly, I myself use the Prestone Extended Life coolant which comes in the yellow jug. You can use almost any coolant that's not considered a "long life" coolant such as GM Dexcool or Mopar Long Life coolant. Those coolant types are formulated for specific vehicles, and using them in a cooling system they weren't designed for will corrode the system and destroy your gaskets and seals.
Also, like people posted above, make sure that you flush all the old coolant out because mixing different types and brands of coolant will cause problems. And also remember to bleed the cooling system of all air too, which can simply be done by removing the radiator cap and letting the vehicle run. Most of the time the radiator cap is the highest point in the system anyways.
