Default D16Z6 WONT REV HIGHER THAN 3200?

Hey guys. This question is on behalf of a good friend of mine who just swapped a d16z6 into his '90 CRX DX.

He is a certified mechanic, but is new to hondas.

THE PROBLEM: engine will not rev higher than around 3200. The ecu is throwing code 4.

He has gotten a new dizzy, ecu, all grounds are there, everything looks good. Mated the engine to the existing dx harness.

It seems like we have checked everything. We even swapped my ecu (88 si) into it and it still wont pass 3200.

ANY good advice? Thanks alot!!!

Well, you need to get rid of that code 4. I've seen people have problems with dist. codes after MPFI swaps such as this and the way they solved it was by reviewing all the wiring work and even re-pinning some connections at the ECU.

Electrical gremlins can be hard to trace sometimes, hopefully my advice will help a little.

The car is in limp mode. That's why it is stuck at 3200. Certain codes will send it into limp mode.

The OBD0 wires would be found at B10 and B12 that control Cylinder code 4. I don't know where they are on your OBD1 harness, but get a wiring diagram for both and check that side.

The more likely culprit would be on the distributor side your conversion from one distributor plug to another, I don't remember the colors but they can easily be found.

As Tippy said, solve your code = solve your rev problem.

My code 4 came from bad connections at the ECU (the tabs that hold against the pins weren't tight enough to make good connection). Also what distributor, what ECU, and are you OBD-0 or OBD-1.

Success!!!

It turned out to be the pins to the ecu connector issue.

Thanks alot! This guys is so stoked. First Honda!

I have a second question,

What are the best ecu upgrades WITHOUT having to convert to obd-1? We have heard about the pr4 from a non-vtec integra, anyone have the low down on this ecu>?

Use the ECU intended for the engine. Trust me.

You still get the best options with OBD1 but since you don't want to go that route, you could do a ghetto mini-me (I wouldn't recommend it).

Or you could go junkyard turbo, which could be a **** ton of fun.
