I've got oil leaking into my distributor on my F22b2 engine. From searching on here, it appears the only fix is replacing the distributor? Where should I look for a replacement? Hate to deal with a junkyard part only to have it do the same in a few miles. Has anyone torn one apart to figure out a fix? Thanks, kyle

I found an oil seal for the distributor on my 97 accord at partstrain.com. I ordered one over the weekend and it should be here on Thursday. No way I will buy a new dizzy when only the seal is bad. I have also located a replacement bearing for when that goes out.

Are you guys talking about the o-ring that seals the shaft at the head? Part #6 in the following diagram...

If so, thats an easy fix. Pull the distributor, replace the o-ring and reinstall.

now if you have oil leaking INTO the distributor my understanding was that wasn't a user serviceable part and required replacement of the distributor. Now if there is some parts you can buy to fix that I am going to assume it's not going to be a quick easy fix like some people may be thinking as the o-ring.

 

I do not know for sure, but I am assuming it is part 6 in that picture. Is there a way to tell for sure without disassembling the rotor etc.?

 

yeah, if it's leaking out of the head and onto the underside of the distributor housing then replace #6 and you should be fine. To do this you dont have to touch anything inside the distributor, just remove the distributor from the head and replace the o-ring.

If it's leaking internally then...

 

Not #6, I am referring to the interior oil seal not pictured in the diagram. You have to take the distributor apart to replace it.

The seal I would assume goes inside the distributor sealing the shaft and the distributor housing. The o-ring goes on the shaft of the distributor and seals the shaft and the head.

Your post above reads that you have leak at the distributor. Is that inside the distributor on is the leak on the outside of the distributor?

You have you know where a leak is coming from before you start just buying parts. You also need to make sure whats involved in a job before buying the parts. The o-ring is a easy replacement, that other seal though I have no idea but since it requires taking the distributor apart it may not be something you are willing to tackle.

 

The O-ring stops oil from leaking between the cylinder head and distributor housing. It is the #6 on the diagram. The seal keeps oil from leaking into the distributor, it is not pictured because it is not available from the stealership or from most auto parts stores. If oil is leaking out of the cap this would mean you need a seal. I will take some pics when I tear mine down for repair.

 

TouringAccord, that is true! I do not know exactly where the leak is. I saw oil-leak close to distributor and kind of trickling down on the tranny side of the engine and assumed it would be between the distributor and head. I will look closely today and hope to determine the source.

well, if you have a oil leak in that area and it's not from the valve cover, take the distributor cap off and look inside. Do you see oil in there? No... then it's more than likely just the o-ring on the shaft that seals the shaft and head. Cheap part and easy fix, have at it. If there is oil inside then wait until 2accrds posts a write-up on how to replace that other seal as I don't have any personal experience with that.

Confirmed. The leak is inside the distributor I'll wait till I see the DIY and replace the seal. Hope that works. Else its time for a new distributor and more $$$$$$$ on this car

 

BTW, despite the leak my car is running fairly smooth. Shouldn't the leak cause rough running?

I honestly don't know what affects it would have on the car running. How much oil is in there? Is it just sitting on the bottom or is it sprayed around?

 

It is sitting at the bottom...in a small pool and drips through the cap o-ring... I have a new cap sitting in my garage (I was lazy), but now I think I'll change it after replacing the seal.

BTW, do you know the size of the rotor-o-ring (part 6)? I have several sizes lying around and if one fits, I'll go ahead and replace it all the same. I do not wish to purchase a new one.

 

yeah, after replacing the internal seal I would clean everything up and replace the cap and rotor.

I don't know the size of the o-ring. They are only like $1.50 though. But if you have some laying around, just pull the old one off and match it up, if you don't have one just get one from the dealer.

I'd just clean up the cap you have now..no point really installing a new one...you can find dizzys at a junkyard for 30-50 bucks..thats were I got mine but remember to mark your timing with a permanet marker when you pull the dizzy off

I have a 96 accord with an internal distributor leak. thought the leak was at the head to the dizzy shaft but it wasn't. the o-ring on the shaft is a plastic one so it will destroy itself when u take it off. haven't had a chance to take the dizzy apart to get to the internal seal yet but once I do I will let all know what it takes, but I really doubt it's a big deal to repair. And the oil leak could possibly cause terrible idling condition due to missfire because of the oil soaked contact points depending on how bad the leak is.

no it's not, it's rubber. Yours just must have been old and brittle.
