I don't know if this helps any, but my '97 Civic DX did the exact same thing. And literally just unplugging the wires and then plugging them back in fixed everything.

Replace it with a OEM H series VSS sensor and worry about the wires later if it dosent work.

That is how you wast alot of money replacing things that it might not be.

They arent expensive at all, and that is what you should start with if that was the code.

I make min wage everything is expensive and the reason why I think it is the wireing is becues it has a harness that someone I dont know wired up. I don't know where they cut and spliced **** or any of that.

wow thats stupid,

anyways....
check the wiring with a volt meter and go from there. If your wires look tore up them re-wire it and plug it in. Dont go out and start buying things until you know the problem, thats just common sense

I have a 97 civic with a b16 and I just had the exact same problem.

Going by the haines manual, the wiring for the civic and integra were the same. Not sure about the H22. I had black with yellow stripe wire, a black wire and a blue(not sure right now if it had a tracer) They black/yellow is the power, black is ground and blue is the return signal.

Before you go anyfurther, check the fuse. Thats all it was for me. What triggered mine was my alternator. The vss and alt. share the same fuse. In my fuse block I believe it was # 15, which was a 7.5A.

So what I think happened was the regulator in the alt. was bad and surged to blow the fuse. New alt. and new fuse = A-OK

Back to the wires. How my manual said to test it was (I am going off memory her so please correct if something is wrong)

Unplug VSS.

Using a multimeter, check for continuity between the ground wire and chassis ground. No cont. = broken ground wire somehere.

Also check for cont. between the power wire and chassis ground. If theres cont. power wire is shorting out to ground.

Next, plug VSS back in and set the meter to volts. Back probe the signal wire with the positive lead and put the negative lead to a good ground. Turn on ignition, but not start engine. Have sum1 spin 1 tire while the other is held still. Once the tire is rotating past 3mph, you should see an increase in voltage on the meter, if not, VSS is bad.

I believe this is the test procedure. I checked my fuse first so I didnt have to do this, I just read it B4 I started.

Hope this helps.
