Default LSD Options

Hey everyone,

Had a few questions in regards to adding LSD to my JDM H22A.

I was looking around and it seems there's a splattering of people with the OEM LSD (M2B4) and a splattering with aftermarket (Quaife/OBX/etc)

Well my question is (and I looked in the FAQ) what honestly would be the preferred setup? (costs negated)

I have heard EXCELLENT reviews of the M2B4 tranny with I believe a swapped final drive? (not sure what this means) Anyone have any guides to help me or any personal experience with the subject?

Right now I have the stock non-lsd tranny from the 92-95 JDM H22A and it's doing fine, however I'm looking more and more into AutoX/HPDE and would like to add in the LSD transmission whether it be aftermarket or OEM.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

im not 100% positive on this but i believe the M2A4 (JDM non-LSD) housing is different from the M2B4 so its not a matter of just dropping in an LSD. so if thats correct, u'll probably have to use an aftermarket LSD.

The RR/AX forum has some good commentary on LSDs from that perspective, and end user comparisons of OEM vs aftermarket LSDs.
They do seem to generally prefer aftermarket ones.

oh and for the final drive, from what i've read. (gears being a common mod for s2k guys) increasing the final drive will make the rest of the gears shorter so you can take advantage of the higher RPM's. im no expert by any means.. so all of this is just an idea for you to search on

Ah I appreciate the help guys.

And yeah dagle - if I went OEM, I'd be buying the full M2B4 transmission and selling my stock one.

A Blue - I'll be sure to check out the RR forum

How does that hold up in the stock h22 tranny?

Would the aftermarket be comparable (or better) than OEM?

quaife is a great lsd. I plan on getting one for my tranny. But if you can get a lsd tranny cheaper than a lsd, that may be an option.

The final drive is the last gear in the tranny aside from shifting gears 1-5, once you select a gear it is sync'd with the final drive, and the final drive is what turns the axles. The lsd connects to the final drive gear. The final drive affects the rpms of all gears as well. As an idea it is said that the 4.64fd increases torque and accleration by 9%. The increase in torque is based on achieving it sooner.

Ah awesome info autoluder I appreciate it.

Prices I've seen for the M2B4 are like 600 minimum and more avg around 700. I figure I would sell my h22 one for roughly 250 or so? and only be out 400ish.

Alternatively I guess I could swap out the fd in my stock one and toss in the quaife lsd and be a happy camper.

If you ever buy a H22A from Hmotors make sure you throw in that +$300 for LSD tranny. Can't beat the price.

Well

1) Already have the H22A and it's already swapped in
2) I was fully prepared to buy the lsd tranny ($200 option where I was at Noyan USA)

When I spoke to the guy I asked about the LSD tranny and he was stating that only like 1/10 they get shipped to them were usable. He was saying how they'd either have been emptied out and it was just the casing - or they'd have swapped trannys (to the non LSD) or they'd just be flat out broken.

When a company turns down an extra $200 I tend to believe them. So I held off.

And regardless the tranny I did get is in excellent shape, as is the motor - which is one reason I'm not completely tossing out getting aftermarket LSD.

Get the Quaife or a clutch type. It's widely accepted that even though OEM and Quaife diffs are the same type, the Quaife is more effective. Clutch type diffs are a little less street friendly than torsen type, but they're much more effective on the track.

I've had both the Quaife and the Kaaz. I'm currently using the Kaaz. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to drive them back to back in similar cars, but so far I prefer the Kaaz. A friend of mine who races an SH with a base engine/trans has a Quaife. He's driven my car after driving his, and he seems to prefer the Quaife, althoug he has complained about wheel spin on certain corners at MidO because one tire becomes unloaded (a torsen diff acts like an open diff if one wheel is unloaded).

the benefit of Quaife it is sealed, meaning once it is in, you don't need to do anything. Also with a racing warranty... you pretty much can't go wrong.

Clutch types still need servicing every now and then.
