still not sure if running open header with mess up the motor ive asked on here some ppl say yes some say no i see alot of ppl running it open header .. can some one that really knows help me out and answer this for me, thanks

 

It will make your motor run like ***, it will smell bad, and be grossly loud. Unless your exhaust is broken off, or your waiting for a new cat-back system to arrive, theres no reason at all to run open header.

 

i believe its possible to burn up some valves too.

 

Running an open header will not mess anything up besides the atmosphere.

However, your car will (probably) be slower, it will sound horrible, and it will smell horrible. Please leave your exhaust in place.

Generally people don't know what they're talking about.

I ran dual open hooker headers on my camaro for a year without a single problem. Even when I rebuilt the engine the valves and all that crap they say it "expletives up" were all in check.

Running open header is fine, on a 4 cylinder it needs back pressure, so you might lose some HP, but it won't "hurt" your car. The "hurt your car" aspect comes from running NO header, ie. Just the exhaust ports are 100% open. That'll kill your valves, though just an open header will only kill your power, expletive up the environment, and make your car sound like **** (or in ricer terms: "cool").

No...it really shouldn't mess anything up except for maybe the underneath of your car. If hot exhaust gasses or fireballs resulting from shifting, downshifting, or rev limiting are occuring, it might torch something under your car that you dont want torched.

Other than that, like other people have thankfully said, it will pollute, and do not much good. You will make more power, but eventually you'll go deaf, and have constant carbon monoxide and noise headaches from exhaust fumes and sound seeping into your cabin.

Not with an open header. People, for some reason, say this is possible while running open HEAD. As in no manifold, just head to atmosphere. Not sure why that would burn up valves, but it seems to be a popular opinion.

 

yeah, i didnt think it would cause i see alot of ppl running it that way i just dont understand if you would lose some hp why ppl do it cause it for sure sounds like ****.. but thanks guys for the info on this

You lose horsepower from worse scavenging, not from a lack of back pressure. Since there is no exhaust piping after the header, the exhaust gas velocity in not maintained when it meets the atmosphere. Back pressure is never desirable in a performance application.
