Default header wrap---how cool does it stay?

i know header wrap is meant to keep the internal temps a little lower, but how about outer temps?

the reason i ask is because i am wrapping my full reaar exhaust section with it becuase it goes under-tank...

just to be safe u know?

i was just wondering how much the headerwrap keeps the OUTSIDE temps (like touching it)

It shouldn't get much more than warm to the touch, especially that far down in the system.

Agreed, I can touch my header with the car running without burning myself. Farther down the stream should be nice and cool.

yea this is true, but not on the track. if your not a road course dude than just forget what im about to say but its useful info

its a good idea to wrap your header because if you notice the headers run under the oil pan. under extreme condtions, the header heats up the oil and in return, your oil temps sky rocket. when wrapped, you could slow down how fast the oil heats up. your exhaust will be fine, just the headers.

and to buzzbomb for touching it without burning, try it after 15 laps at sebring and you may not have anymore fingerprints. lol....

it keeps it warm enough for touch. becareful if you are in a climate where rain is frequent, once enough water gets trapped in eventually the pipe will rot over time.

Ok, ok, good point. I should have said I can run into town, go through the local drive thru, come home, pop the hood and touch it without being burned. I wouldn’t advise touching anything on the engine after a few hard laps around a track. I was just trying to give an example of the thermal protection is all.

i thought thermal wrap is about increasing the speed of the flow (keeping the air hot so it moves faster) than keeping the engine bay cool.

Tecnically you are correct, but I don't race so it's more usefull to keep the engine bay cooler.

Keeps heat in to improve exhaust flow and keeps the heat away from the engine.

If your worried about water just get a heat resistant can of paint and spray the header wrap, it'll create a barrier against water.
