Removing Check engine on 96 honda accord ex..
So, as alot of you know, I have a 1996 honda accord. I Fixed my car during the week. ( had a 3rd cylinder misfire) seems to be working much better with no misfire. Well i read my repair manual, and it says in the book, that 1995 and later v6 and the 1996 and later four cylinder models are equipped with the on-baord Diagonstic II (obd-II) diagnostic system.. well it says if I remove the backup fuse under the the hood in the relay box, that it should erase the check engine light since its built in. also says i can jumper 2 connections under the right side passenger side 2 receive the 2 digit codes. welll i dont wanna jumper the connections i just wanna erase the check engine. Would there be a way to do this? says in the haynes book that if i remove the back up fuse is should erase it, and the radio etc... radio reset...but no check engine was gone when i started the car. any opinions?
i was trying to get out of it these easy way, instead of reading with the obd-II scanner, since i dont have one. any help would be great.
i got price on reseting the check engine at e-Z auto in ruthven ontario, and they wanted $150-$200 or so... forget the exact price, didnt really remember it after he told me it was that much.
thanks in advance.

yah i did that before with battery pulling, just wasnt sure if it would make it permanant or if it wud pop back up.
disconnect the (-) battery cable for a few. The CEL will only come back on if the reason for the DTC/CEL has not been fixed. In this case I would do the SCS connector jump that is shown in your manual to retrieve the 1 or 2 digit code. That way you will know what to fix to permanently remove the DTC/CEL.
sooo removing the neg wire will permanant take off check engine.. but if it comes back on, then there is something else wrong. am i correct?

You might also check with your local honda dealer. if im NOT mistaken, for your accord, honda issued an emissions warranty extension and will actually cover alot of things such as, spark plugs, 02 sensors, etc. depends on the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) though. Granted your vehicle doesnt have over 175 miles (methinks) you should have this extension.
but call your local honda dealer and let them run your vin number and see if you qualify :D
cant go wrong with warranty repairs for a 12 year old car.

You really have no idea what you're talking about.
Don't know.
Don't talk.
There is in fact an emissions recall on those cars, I recently had it done on my other accord.
It's up to 150k miles on it for the 96/97 Accords.
New dizzy, plugs, wires,etc

Yahhh Well I wont bother because, my accord has 236,000 on it.. but when i gotthe emissions and all done, past with flying colors! my car is mint shape, and over 20,000 into it. barely none of the car is stock... all aftermarket.
Your in the same boat that I'm in I think. Except that I haven't quite put in $20K. Maybe $10K tops w/paint, when all is said and done. The car is still only worth 5-7K at most to any normal car buyer (red book). It's a very expensive hobby, It's in no way an investment that's for sure!
